Black Widow Theory Taskmaster Fought Captain America In Winter Soldier

The villain in Marvel’s Black Widow, the mysterious Taskmaster, might have fought Captain America (Chris Evans) back in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Black Widow marks the official start of the MCU’s Phase 4 and is the long-awaited solo adventure of Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). Fans have been eager to see Natasha helm her own movie, but it’s taken a long time for Marvel to green-light it. The decision to finally give Black Widow a solo film comes after she sacrificed herself in Avengers: Endgame, making Black Widow a prequel set immediately after the events of Captain America: Civil War.

Trailers for Black Widow have teased the arrival of Taskmaster, a villain from the comics who has the ability to mimic anybody’s fighting style. Not much is known about Taskmaster’s role in the film, but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating about everything from his identity to why he’s going after Natasha. In Black Widow, Natasha must return to her assassin roots to uncover a conspiracy with the help of her former family. Somehow, this puts her in Taskmaster’s path. However, there’s a chance the two characters’ stories might have already intersected.

In recent pieces of footage from Black Widow, including the trailer that debuted with the Super Bowl, Taskmaster is seen fighting with a shield, which brings to mind a certain well-known Marvel character. Could Taskmaster have fought Steve Rogers in the past? And could it have been during The Winter Soldier? Let’s break down why this might be possible.

Taskmaster’s Identity Is A Big Secret

So far, the trailers for Black Widow haven’t shown Taskmaster’s face. He’s always wearing his mask, and he’s always seen in the middle of a fight. Because of this, no one knows who he really is. He might not even be a he. Marvel has gone so far as to not even reveal the actor playing Taskmaster, further preventing fans from figuring out who is behind the mask. There are several potential theories about who Taskmaster could be, from Cap himself to Natasha’s family member Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), though both seem like unlikely candidates at this point.

There’s a good chance Marvel will continue to hide Taskmaster’s identity so that it is a big reveal in the film. However, for it to be a truly meaningful reveal, Taskmaster has to have some significance to the MCU as a whole, whether that be through Natasha’s past or someone else’s. Even if Taskmaster turns out to be someone audiences have never met before, he can still be relevant if he has ties to past events.

Taskmaster Is Copying Captain America’s Fighting Moves

As mentioned before, Taskmaster has the ability to adopt someone else’s fighting style just by watching them. His appearance in the first trailer for Black Widow calls to mind Natasha’s close friend Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) since he wields a bow and arrow. This had many fans wondering if Taskmaster once fought Clint, which could be likely. However, Clint isn’t the only person whose fighting style Taskmaster has been glimpsed emulating. The second trailer showed Taskmaster with a shield. Compared to other potential weapons, a shield isn’t exactly anyone’s first choice. Unless, of course, that person is Captain America.

Beyond just the usage of the shield, Taskmaster’s movements are similar to Steve’s. He’s shown throwing the shield at Natasha, and then later flipping through the air, a move that Steve has used more than once throughout his time in the MCU. This seems to indicate that, even if they haven’t crossed paths, Taskmaster has certainly watched Steve fight. And while there is a chance they have not fought each other in real life, there is one moment where Steve and Taskmaster could’ve come face to face.

Theory: Taskmaster Fought Captain America In The Winter Soldier

One of the highlights of Winter Soldier is the iconic elevator fight. Unaware of HYDRA’s infiltration of SHIELD, Steve gets in an elevator at SHIELD headquarters that soon becomes filled with STRIKE team members and other SHIELD agents. Realizing something is wrong just before it happens, Steve asks if anyone wants to get out. In response, all of the men in the elevator attack Steve, forcing him to fend them off when he’s incredibly outnumbered and stuck in a tiny space. The elevator fight scene has long been considered one of the best action sequences in the MCU and was even referenced in Endgame.

There’s a possibility Taskmaster was one of the men who Steve fought in the elevator. All of the agents involved were HYDRA, meaning they weren’t exactly on the good side to begin with. Most tellingly, however, the elevator scene is where Steve kicks his shield up and catches it with his arm. That move was copied by Taskmaster in the Super Bowl spot, furthering the similarities between him and Steve. Of course, when Steve does it in Winter Soldier, everyone appears to be knocked out cold. Marvel could retcon this though by suggesting Taskmaster was coming to in the moments before Steve escaped the elevator.

Having Taskmaster be one of the goons from Winter Soldier would also fit Black Widow’s theme of the past coming back to haunt Natasha. She is essentially a second lead in Winter Soldier, with her being one of Steve’s closest allies who ends up on the run with him. Black Widow played such a big role in Winter Soldier that the reappearance of someone from that film would affect her just as deeply as it would Steve.

What This Would Mean For Taskmaster & Black Widow

If Taskmaster truly ends up being someone from Winter Soldier, it will add an extra level of personal stakes to Black Widow. Black Widow is already shaping up to be a very personal adventure for Natasha since it’s going to take her back to the Red Room where she was trained. That arguably is one of the biggest sources of inner conflict for her, but so was the fall of SHIELD. When Black Widow joined SHIELD, she thought she was finally doing something good, something that would help wipe the red out of her ledger. It marked a big turning point in her life. However, it turned out to be a lie thanks to HYDRA’s involvement, and she suddenly had to grapple with the idea that she still wasn’t as good as she wanted to be.

There’s a chance that the reason Taskmaster is going after Natasha now is because she’s going up against the Red Room, and if that’s the case, Taskmaster could essentially bring HYDRA and the Red Room together. That would be the ultimate source of conflict for Natasha, the two organizations that have used her like a weapon now somewhat united. Marvel movies are always better when the villains have personal ties to the heroes, and Taskmaster being present for Winter Soldier would definitely add that extra element to Black Widow. Of course, this is still all speculation at this point. The real story might not be revealed until Black Widow reaches theaters in May.
