A new variant cover for the upcoming Darkhold: Blade #1 reveals the Daywalker’s terrifying new “Defiled” form in all its glory, courtesy of Mico Suayan and Frank D’armata. The series will see Scarlet Witch and a team of Avengers transformed as they attempt to prevent Chthon from using the book of ancient spells to destroy the multiverse. But when their very histories are twisted, each will take on a new form, and Blade will become the ruler of all vampires.

Blade’s new form is referred to as Blade “Defiled” in designs by Cian Tormey, and sees Blade twisted by the Darkhold – the magical tome that originally created vampires in the Marvel Universe. While Blade has recently been acting as the sheriff of Dracula’s new Vampire Nation, he’s only there to kill the undead. Now, it seems that when dark magic twists his past, he’ll become their ruler instead, with a fierce new design that’s utterly terrifying on a newly revealed variant cover for the Darkhold: Blade #1 comic tie-in.

Revealed by artist Mico Suayan on Twitter, including justifiably high praise for colorist Frank D’armata, the variant cover sees a snarling “Defiled” Blade with huge, extended fangs, a new muscular build, glowing eyes, and a sword emblazoned with the Darkhold’s sigil. The comic comes from Daniel Kibblesmith and Federico Sabbatini, and will tie into the larger Darkhold comic event, which begins in September 29’s Darkhold Alpha #1.

Blade has long loathed vampires due to their murder of his mother, fighting to eradicate the undead race from existence and counter all Dracula’s attempts to prey on humanity. Sadly, the Darkhold’s power will flip that story, turning Blade into the ultimate symbol of everything he hates.

With his recent inclusion on the Avengers roster and another one-shot tie-in to the Death of Doctor Strange coming soon, Blade is finally a fixture in mainstream Marvel comics, with his expertise in eldritch magic explaining why he’s on the team Scarlet Witch assembles once she senses the danger of the dark god Chthon. With Mahershala Ali set to play the hero in Bassam Tariq’s upcoming MCU movie Blade, fan anticipation is high, and Marvel’s vampire hunter is finally getting time to shine after a long history of being undervalued, and even a cancelled series intended to follow the adventures of his daughter. Fans of Eric Brooks can snag Mico Suayan and Frank D’armata’s variant cover when Darkhold: Blade #1 hits stores October 27, revealing just what it would take for the Daywalker to embrace vampires as his subjects rather than his prey.
