Bleach: 10 Characters Who Changed the Most By The End Of The Series

During the story of Bleach, many characters change for the better, and they are like a totally different person by the end.

Tite Kubo’s Bleach was once part of shonen’s unofficial “big three,” alongside Naruto and One Piece, and these series are popular not just for their excellent combat systems, but also their compelling and memorable characters, too. Soul Reapers, ninjas, and heroic pirates are easy to like.

A good character needs more than a zanpakuto or jutsu to be compelling, though. In Bleach, many of the main characters are dynamic and undergo some vital changes, both on the inside and outside, over the course of their character arcs, and that’s what makes them truly special.

10 Rukia Kuchiki Went From Street Urchin To Beloved Hero & Mother

Rukia Kuchiki didn’t have an easy life for the most part. She and her big sister, Hisana, grew up poor on the streets, and Hisana abandoned Rukia at one point. A young Rukia ran around with a gang of friends for years until Miyako Shiba inspired her to become a Soul Reaper.

Rukia did just that, but her foster brother, Byakuya, didn’t seem to love her at all, and Rukia was miserable. She and Byakuya later reconciled, though, and Rukia became happier than she’d ever been. Later still, she acquired her own bankai, Hakka no Togame, and she married her childhood friend, Renji Abarai. They also have a daughter, Ichika Abarai.

9 Captain Byakuya Kuchiki Learned To Put Others First

Rukia’s foster brother, Byakuya, was born into a noble family, and he had all he could ever want growing up. As a young man, he married Hisana despite tradition and law forbidding it, and he later broke the law again by adopting Rukia. He swore to never break the law for other people’s sake again.

This decision guided Byakuya’s actions in the Soul Society arc, but Byakuya was later inspired to value his friends and family over the law, which changed him for the better. He finally became the brother Rukia had always wanted, and he even re-assessed his relationship with his zanpakuto, a humble move on his part.

8 Chad Learned To Control His Strength

In his boyhood, Chad was a strong but brutal kid who vented his bitter frustration on others, and he was the neighborhood bully for quite some time. Then, his grandfather taught him the true meaning of strength, and Chad took it to heart at once. He soon became a soft-spoken pacifist.

Chad later befriended Ichigo, awakened his own spiritual powers, and took part in the raid to rescue Rukia. Chad also acquired the powers of a Fullbring, and after Yhwach’s final defeat, Chad put his strength to good use as a skilled boxer who regularly appeared on TV.

7 Lieutenant Momo Hinamori Finally Got Over Aizen

At first, Lieutenant Hinamori was hopelessly infatuated with Captain Sosuke Aizen, and was totally unaware of her Captain’s insidious true nature. Aizen commented on this, and even tried to kill her before outing himself as a villain. Despite that, Momo still didn’t want anyone to kill Aizen in battle, no matter how evil he was.

Clearly, Aizen was embedded deep in Momo’s mind, without even needing to use a kido spell or his shikai to do it. After a point, though, Momo finally realized that her old Captain is a monster who deserves no mercy, and she accepted Shinji Hirako the Visored as her new Captain. Now she’s more cheerful and carefree with Aizen out of the picture.

6 Captain Sajin Komamura Learned To Accept Himself

For years, the huge Captain Sajin Komamura wore a metal helmet to hide his wolf head, being ashamed of his true form. He shed this helmet during the Soul Society arc, and he never wore it again. He fought proudly against Aizen and his Arrancar thugs and even took on his former friend, Captain Kaname Tosen.

Sajin’s self-acceptance was at an all-time high, and he was finally ready to confront his canine grandfather in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc to make a bold request. Sajin learned a new technique and sacrificed his heart to gain the power necessary to defeat the Sternritter. His old self wouldn’t have done that.

5 Yoruichi Shihoin Will Do Whatever It Takes

Yoruichi Shihoin the rogue was born into the noble Shihoin family, and she once served as squad 2’s Captain as an assassin-style Soul Reaper. She had it all, but when her friend Kisuke faced twisted justice, Yoruichi sacrificed it all to save her friend. She became an outlaw in the process, but it was worth it.

Yoruichi changed her lifestyle and outfit alike and disguised herself as a black cat. Later, she reconciled with her protege, Soi Fon, and she even refined her Shunko technique to push her melee skills to the next level to fight the Sternritter. Yoruichi is a practical one, and she’s definitely not afraid of change.

4 Lieutenant Renji Abarai Became Ichigo’s Vital Ally

Lieutenant Renji Abarai’s character arc is similar to Rukia’s, and they share a history. He grew up poor on the streets right alongside Rukia, and escaped that hard life when he enrolled at the Soul Reaper Academy. He was assigned to squad 5 before ending up in squad 11 and then 6.

For years, Renji was a dutiful Soul Reaper who followed Byakuya’s every order, but when he lost to Ichigo, he was inspired, and he turned on Byakuya for Rukia’s sake. Now, Renji is a proper shonen hero who values his friends above all else, and he even gained a bankai and later married Rukia as well. He’s covered a lot of ground.

3 Uryu Ishida Learned The Power Of Friendship

Uryu Ishida was proud to be a Quincy, and he was devastated when his beloved grandfather, Soken, died at the hands of the Soul Reapers. He grew bitter and wanted revenge, but his unfriendly rivalry with Ichigo soon turned healthier when Rukia was captured. Uryu was glad to help an innocent Soul Reaper regain her freedom.

Uryu learned to appreciate his friends more and more, especially Orihime, and he gallantly fought alongside Renji against the 8th Espada, Szayelaporro Grantz. Uryu even joined the Wandenreich, only to betray it from the inside, and risk his life fighting Jugram for the sake of his friends.

2 Ulquiorra Schiffer Learned To Respect “The Heart”

At first, it seemed the cold and brutal villain Ulquiorra Schiffer’s personality was set in stone, but that wasn’t the case. As a born nihilist, he rejected concepts such as friendship, hope, and the intangible bonds that keep friends together, and he scorned Orihime Inoue for claiming that her friends were in her intangible “heart.”

When Ichigo triumphed over Ulquiorra for Orihime’s sake, Ulquiorra changed his mind and wanted to see Orihime’s heart and find out what this power really was. That was a big step for him, but he died before he could learn much more. But at least he tried.

1 Ichigo Kurosaki Powered Up Many Times & Explored New Worlds

Deep down, shonen protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki didn’t change that much, and he was consistently a grouchy antihero who cared more about his friends than saving the world. On the outside, though, he changed quite a bit. For example, he was totally transformed when Rukia turned him into a Soul Reaper in Season 1.

Ichigo gained Zangtsu after that, and he trained to achieve bankai as well. His entire perspective on the world shifted when he explored the Soul Society and Hueco Mundo, learning much about worlds beyond his own. Later, after his final victory over Yhwach, Ichigo hung up the cape, so to speak, and became a cheerful family man with his lover, Orihime Inoue. He certainly earned his retirement.
