Boba Fett Season 2 Could Happen If Fans Like The New Direction

Director/executive producer Robert Rodriguez says The Book of Boba Fett season 2 is likely but is dependent upon audience’s response to the show. The new Star Wars series serves as a spin-off to The Mandalorian, which teased the return of the titular bounty hunter in its first season before properly confirming his survival in the final episodes of season 2. Boba Fett was believed to have been killed after Luke Skywalker knocks him into the Sarlacc pit in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi before coming back with assassin Fennec Shand in his service.

The Book of Boba Fett will see the returns of both Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen as the titular bounty hunter and Fennec, with the two setting off through Tattooine to make their mark on the criminal underworld and claim the territory once owned by Jabba the Hutt. The series hails from The Mandalorian creator and executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni as well as executive producer Robert Rodriguez, who returns to the helm for multiple episodes. Though The Book of Boba Fett is currently serving as a replacement of sorts for The Mandalorian season 3, it may not be the end for the character.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter for the series, Rodriguez opened up about the potential future for The Book of Boba Fett. Though the director/executive producer has his lips sealed on specifics of what’s to come for the character, Rodriguez is confident the Mandalorian spin-off is only the beginning of Fett’s return in the Star Wars universe. “If people really love it, I’m sure they’d want to make more.”

As with any new program on a streaming service, audience reaction is key to determining whether a show has a future past its first season and The Book of Boba Fett is certainly no different. The Star Wars franchise has experienced something of a rollercoaster in recent years, with its Disney+ titles receiving rave reviews and strong viewership for the platform while its big screen efforts have largely divided critics and audiences alike. Given the success of the streaming titles, however, the likelihood of The Book of Boba Fett season 2 does seem as high as the anticipation for the Mandalorian spin-off.

A strong reception to The Book of Boba Fett would also prove promising for the other Mandalorian spin-offs in development for the streaming platform, including the Rosario Dawson-led Ahsoka. With production on said series set to begin in March and next year set to see the premieres of Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Mandalorian season 3, Star Wars fans certainly won’t be left hungry for new content even if The Book of Boba Fett remains a one-and-done affair. Only time will tell when the series premieres on Disney+ on December 29.

Way back in 2015 while still in his college days, Grant got his start in the entertainment journalism industry with creator-friendly site Moviepilot until it shuttered nearly three years later. To say he’s a lover of film and television would be an understatement and when he’s not mass consuming either you can find him exploring the world of Dungeons & Dragons with friends or slowly making his way through his gaming backlog.
