Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters – IG-88 #1

Although bounty hunters in the Star Wars galaxy abide by a code to not interfere with each other’s business, Boba Fett has taken on IG-88 in an epic fight. As War of the Bounty Hunters concludes, the event has lived up to its title.

After the carbonite-encased body of Han Solo went missing, Boba Fett was on a race to retrieve his cargo intended for Jabba the Hutt. As the rebels, the Empire, Crimson Dawn, and a handful of others are struggling to find the smuggler, the bounty hunter is up against the entire galaxy. Boba Fett’s peers are also joining the action, as character dynamics that haven’t been seen before in the Star Wars galaxy are playing out. In Darth Vader #13, Darth Vader fought IG-88 and bested the phlutdroid, decimating his robotic body. Since IG-88 hasn’t shown up in current canon past the events of The Empire Strikes Back, any loss has the potential to be permanent. With his one-shot epilogue to War of the Bounty Hunters, written by Rodney Barnes with art by Guiu Vilanova, it’s been revealed that rumors of his death have been greatly exaggerated.

When Boba Fett shows up on the scene, he is instantly engaged in a battle with IG-88. The fight feels like something a kid would have play out with action figures, fulfilling a fan fantasy that rivals Robot Chicken. Despite having a reputation as the galaxy’s most infamous bounty hunter, Boba Fett doesn’t defeat IG-88 easily. Coming out of a fresh takedown from Vader, the phlutdroid doesn’t exactly have a clear advantage. As IG-88 stands above Han Solo’s frozen body, as recently retrieved by Boba aboard Slave-I, he contemplates taking Jabba’s prize for himself. Just then, Fett walks into the room, prepared to fight the old colleague. “Heard Darth Vader destroyed you.” “As you can see, rumors of my destruction have been greatly exaggerated.”

The two bounty hunters exchange blasts inside Slave-I, hitting the ceiling and impairing the ship. As Boba recounts his journey to recover Han Solo, he references taking on the rebels, Crimson Dawn, and several others, reminding himself he can’t lose this fight. IG-88 underestimates the “great Boba Fett” and ends up getting frozen himself in a trap that had been set on the ship, in case that someone tried to steal Solo.

Before taking off from Tatooine, Boba politely removes the frozen droid and puts him outside to dry. IG-88’s loss causes him to reevaluate things, specifically relating to his code of honor as Boba Fett hasn’t abandoned his sense of ethics. It might seem that Boba Fett had shown mercy, but such an action also demonstrates his dominance over IG-88.
