Boogie Nights Main Characters Ranked By Likability

Viewers discover several different characters in Boogie Nights. The film gives audiences one of Mark Whalberg’s best movies with his performance as Dirk Diggler. It follows burgeoning star Dirk’s journey through the adult film world thanks to the help of director Jack Horner. Along the way, he meets an array of different characters.

Some of the main characters in Boogie Nights are goofy like Reed Rothchild, while others like Little Bill Thompson are more conservative. However, the roles on screen are more or less likable based on the actions and demeanor of the characters. The more pleasant personas fans see become as such thanks to the way they live their lives.

Scotty J.

Scotty J. is one of the most tragic characters in Boogie Nights. His unrequited love for Dirk is put on display throughout his arc. Audiences might feel bad for Scotty. However, he does little to make viewers root for him.

Scotty J. annoys Dirk and Reed with his tagging along. He copies their dress and even buys the same sports car as Dirk in an attempt to fit in with them. Viewers pity Scott, but like Dirk and Reed, wouldn’t want him around cramping their style.

Maggie / Amber Waves

Maggie, who is sometimes referred to by her stage name Amber Waves, is Jack Horner’s love interest. She helps him with film production and often acts in his movies. Furthermore, she develops a maternal relationship with Dirk and some of the other young actors. However, her selfishness makes her less likable than some of her peers.

Maggie’s self-serving behavior is put on display when she introduces Dirk to drugs. Dirk is reluctant if not uninterested to partake. However, Maggie pressures him into drug use to manipulate him into forming a closer relationship. Dirk suffers when he delves too deep into the drug world as a result, and Maggie is unable to help him when he does.

Bill “Little Bill” Thompson

Boogie Nights Main Characters Ranked By Likability

Little Bill is Jack’s assistant and one of the production’s hardest-working crewmembers. He is often prepared and seems to take a genuine interest in making a quality product. However, some of his actions make him less pleasant than other folks on Jack’s team.

Little Bill’s main conflict is his problem with his wife. She continues to cheat on him and ignore his protests against it. As a result, Bill snaps and kills her, her lover, and himself. Bill’s inability to face his problems makes him a murderer. If he was able to keep his cool, fans would see him in a better light.

Buck Swope

Buck is a warm character and is generally kind to the others he meets and works with. Furthermore, he is one of the smartest characters in Boogie Nights. Unlike some of the other main players, Buck rarely crosses people for his own benefit.

However, his unpleasant demeanor makes him less affable than some of the film’s other main characters. Buck is often seen moping. When no one recognizes his costume for New Year’s Eve, he pouts at a table alone. He lashes out at a bank teller when they are unable to give him a loan. If Buck were more easy-going, he’d be more likable.

Eddie Adams / Dirk Diggler

Boogie Nights Main Characters Ranked By Likability

Eddie, who prefers his stage name Dirk, is the protagonist in the film. He is far from unlikable and treats people with respect. He is polite and kind when he meets others, usually with a smile on his face. Some fans call him one of the most lovable characters in any P.T. Anderson film. However, when he falls from grace he presents some qualities that turn fans off.

When Dirk lashes out at Jack, who has given him the opportunity to become a star, he appears selfish. He becomes a diva thanks to his fame and makes others feel small when he implies he is the most important person on set. Dirk is redeemed when he apologizes at the film’s finale. However, his actions bar him from becoming the most likable character.

Jack Horner

Jack is the patriarch of the film-making family presented in the film. He provides jobs for all the actors and crew involved in his adult movie business and is often treated as a father figure. As such, he is lovable, but his power allows for some of his poor qualities.

Jack is blunt but generally kind. However, he flies off the handle when challenged. When Dirk loses his cool on set, Jack is quick to ban him from set indefinitely. When insulted by a stranger while filming an on-the-street segment, he helps gravely injure him. Audiences forgive Jack for this behavior thanks to his charm, but it isn’t forgotten.

Brandy / Rollergirl

Boogie Nights Main Characters Ranked By Likability

Some fans call Brandy, more often called by her stage name Rollergirl, one of P.T. Anderson’s best female characters. She is perhaps the most cheerful person fans see in Boogie Nights. She always has a smile on her face and treats people with kindness. Her bubbly personality appears effortless and doesn’t often falter.

Rollergirl is almost without unpleasant qualities. She only causes harm to others when she attacks a man who insults her with ugly comments in a limousine. However, many fans would say she is entitled to her reaction in the scene. Without this moment, there would be no exception to her warmth.

Reed Rothchild

Reed Rothchild is perhaps the most pleasant character in all of Boogie Nights. He is funny, kind, and full of goofy energy. Reed seems to always be looking to entertain and please others. His nature is underscored by his hobby of performing magic tricks to his friends.

Reed is seldom seen acting maliciously. He is part of Dirk and Todd Parker’s drug deal which is meant to rip off a dealer, but he seems to only join Dirk out of support. There isn’t a character on screen who appears to dislike Reed, and audiences have the same pleasant reaction to his spirited character.
