A new trailer for The Book of Boba Fett teases the return of the Rancor. Boba Fett is a towering figure in the canon of the Star Wars universe, having first appeared in the notorious Star Wars Holiday Special’s animated segment in 1978. The character went on to appear in live-action in The Empire Strikes Back before seemingly dying in the Sarlacc Pit on Tatooine in Return of the Jedi.

However, as the Disney+ series The Mandalorian revealed in season 2, Boba Fett is alive and well. He is currently played by Temuera Morrison, who previously portrayed Jango Fett, the character from whom Boba is cloned, in the prequel Attack of the Clones. The solo spin-off series The Book of Boba Fett, which also features Ming-Na Wen as the assassin Fennec Shand, is set to premiere on the streaming service on December 29. The show will follow the pair fighting for control over the territory once run by crime boss Jabba the Hutt.

Disney+ has just released a brand new trailer for the series, showcasing the character’s triumphant return to Tatooine. At the end of the minute-long clip, Boba Fett and Fennec Shand are staring down into the pit in Jabba’s palace that used to contain the Rancor. However, the teaser doesn’t reveal whether or not there is still a beast within the pit or if it’s merely an empty cage. Check out the video below:

The Rancor first appeared in Return of the Jedi in a cage underneath Jabba’s main meeting space. The creature is a massive bipedal reptile creature about the size of a bear, with huge fangs and strong grasping claws. If anyone displeased Jabba, he would have them thrown into the Rancor’s pit to be devoured. When Luke Skywalker, who was there on a mission to rescue Han Solo (who was frozen in carbonite at the end of the previous film), was thrown into the pit, he killed the Rancor much to the chagrin of its trainer.

Considering that Jabba was killed that very same day, it’s unlikely that he replaced the Rancor himself. However, in the intervening years, it is possible that a new one could have been found by whoever is currently in possession of the palace. Likewise, considering the fact that Boba Fett himself appeared to die in Return of the Jedi, the Rancor may not have been as dead as it looked and could still be lurking in the pit nursing its wounds. The Book of Boba Fett will surely reveal the answer, and considering the nature of these Star Wars series, Boba and Fennec will likely encounter some new creature if it doesn’t turn out to be the Rancor itself.
