Link from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild jumped to his death due to Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con drift. For years, Nintendo Switch owners have complained about the pertinent Joy-Con drift issue, which causes some controller’s joystick sensors to detect movements when the controller is not being used. The faulty input usually causes a drift in either or both of the joysticks, resulting in unwanted camera movement or premature character action. Gameplay often suffers due to Joy-Con drift, with the unintended sensory input causing unwanted movement or camera angles during play. Despite numerous class-action lawsuits filed against Nintendo, the Japanese gaming giant has done little to rectify the hardware issue.

Joy-Con drift plagued both Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite consoles, and a July report claimed that the improved Nintendo Switch OLED wouldn’t fix Joy-Con drift either. Nintendo has offered replacement controllers to those affected by the issue, though the problem itself has not been solved. Many hoped that Nintendo would address the issue in the updated Nintendo Switch OLED console, but it was revealed that the new model uses the same Joy-Cons as previous ones, indicating that the Joy-Con drift will be a persistent issue. And despite Nintendo’s Joy-Con drift issue being investigated by nine different countries, the company still has not revealed how it would rectify Joy-Con drift.

Captured by Reddit user typicalreddituser57, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Link succumbed to the joystick issue, falling to his death as a result of Joy-Con drift. In the video, Link spawns onto Central Tower but immediately begins walking toward the edge. The creator indicated that the movement was automatic and had been caused by their controller’s Joy-Con drift. Link immediately falls to his death but respawns with half his health. Decayed Guardians quickly lock on to Link, though, unleashing their powerful blast. Link dies and the player is forced to reload.

Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con drift negatively affects gameplay, as it causes unwanted movements and camera turns. As was the case with Link’s plummet, the joystick had an incorrect sensory input, making Link move by himself. The character then died as a result. This commonly occurs when the player is AFK, as the affected Joy-Con will signal the character to move without the player’s permission. Even when the player is using the controller, Joy-Con drift can still cause the camera to spin or characters to move off in an unwanted direction.

Since The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an action-adventure game, dying can have a big impact on gameplay. Though there is no in-game penalty for death, when Link dies in BOTW, it forces the game back to the latest autosave or save file, which can result in a lot of lost progress if the player forgets to save often. While many players take precautions and save before every battle, dying can still be frustrating, especially when it’s caused by faulty hardware.
