Brad Pitt Formula One Racing Movie Sparks Streaming Bidding War

Netflix, Amazon, Apple, and Disney are just some of the streaming services and studios lined up to get their hands on a new Formula One racing movie set to star Brad Pitt. Pitt, whose illustrious career began with appearances in 80s television series like Dallas, Growing Pains, and 21 Jump Street, quickly became a household name following his breakout role in 1991’s Thelma and Louise. Since then, the multiple award-winning actor and producer has racked up an impressive list of screen credits as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, including helming a previous Netflix exclusive release with 2017’s War Machine.

New reports from THR now have Pitt linked to a new film project set in the fast-paced world of Formula One racing. The as-yet-untitled project is slated to be directed by Top Gun: Maverick’s Joseph Kosinski (who was previously attached to Ford v Ferrari) and produced by blockbuster mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer. While the details around the film’s potential plot are scant, it is also suggested that British Formula One racing legend Lewis Hamilton is also attached in some capacity. With the level of star power involved, a bidding war has reportedly erupted between studios including the likes of Paramount, MGM, Sony, and Universal, as well as the major streaming service providers for exclusive rights to the project.

Where once an exclusive streaming release would have been considered a second-tier option for a major blockbuster such as this, in recent years streaming services are spending increasing amounts of money to lure big-name talent as they battle it out for much-coveted audience shares. The recent $200 million budget for Netflix’s Red Notice, starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds, not only made it the streamer’s most expensive film to date, but also proves the lengths that streamers are beginning to go to attract new subscribers. Of course, with other more traditional studios also involved in the bidding war, Brad Pitt’s next blockbuster may still make its way to the big screen yet.
