Actor Brad Pitt is more than just an A-lister. This Oscar winner has starred in more critically acclaimed films than most. In fact, Pitt has starred in enough films for the MBTI personality system to determine which Pitt movie character you might be.
At the same time, Pitt has also done some impressive works behind the scenes as a producer. In fact, some even think there are enough movies that prove that Pitt is a better producer than a director. As far as the films he’s starred in though, they became classics, fan favorites, and made quite a splash at the box office.
10 Ocean’s Thirteen, $311, 744, 465
Released in 2007, this was the last Ocean’s film that starred Pitt’s Rusty Ryan alongside George Clooney’s Danny Ocean. In this installment, Danny Ocean and his crew plot revenge against Al Pacino’s Willy Bank after he double-crossed Danny’s mentor, Reuben Tishkoff.
Even if the film had done relatively well at the box office worldwide, Pitt had made it clear that he was already done with the franchise. In fact, Pitt’s life goals include not having to make Ocean’s 14. When the franchise returned to the big screen, it introduced an all-female Ocean’s 8 crew.
9 Inglorious Basterds, $316,915,264
Directed by Quentin Tarantino, the film is set during the first year of the German occupation in France. In the movie, Brad plays Lt. Aldo Raine, a character he clearly couldn’t get enough of.
While speaking with Rotten Tomatoes, Tarantino recalled, “He loved that character so much, he would stay in character for the most part during the day.” Aldo also went on to become one of Pitt’s most memorable characters. Meanwhile, there are quite a few films you can check out if you like Inglorious Basterds.
8 Se7en, $328, 125,643
This crime thriller from David Fincher stars Pitt as a newly transferred detective who worked with a retiring detective, played by Morgan Freeman, to catch a sadistic serial killer portrayed by Kevin Spacey. The film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow as Brad Pitt’s wife, Tracy, who meets a shocking end later on in the film.
We never get to see exactly what’s in the box that Spacey’s character left on the side of the road. But based on Mill’s reaction, we know it was Tracy’s head. Oddly enough, this horrifying scene also inspired some hilarious Se7en memes later on.
7 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, $329,631,958
In this 2008 film, Pitt stars as the titular character who happens to be aging in reverse. Also directed by Fincher, the film also stars Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, Taraji P. Henson, and Tilda Swinton. When it came to tackling his role, Fincher recalled that Pitt wanted to fully immerse himself in Benjamin’s situation.
While speaking with Emanuel Levy, the director recalled, “Brad was only interested in playing the part if he could play the character through the totality of his life.” The film ended up winning three Oscars. Pitt also took an Oscar nomination for best actor.
6 Ocean’s Twelve, $362,989,076
In this follow-up to the original Ocean’s film, Danny Ocean and the gang face a tough situation after spending most of their money from their previous five-casino heist.
The problem is they got ratted out to Andy Garcia’s Terry Benedict and now, he wants his money back with interest. And so, they decide to come together again to pull off several heists in Europe. As you could expect, the entire gang is back for this sequel. However, critics were less than impressed by this Ocean’s film this time around.
5 Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, $376,158,396
This 2019 film finally sees Pitt star alongside fellow A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio. The men are also joined by I, Tonya’s Margot Robbie. Set in 1969 Los Angeles, the film centers around struggling actor Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his stuntman and longtime best friend Cliff Booth (Pitt).
Aside from becoming one of Pitt’s highest-grossing films, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood also made the list of must-see movies from Quentin Tarantino. Perhaps, more importantly for Pitt, it’s also the film that got him an Oscar win.
4 Ocean’s Eleven, $450,728,529
This 2001 heist film became one the best remakes of all time. Based on a 1960 film of the same name, Clooney appeared more than ready to take on Frank Sinatra’s old role. Aside from Clooney and Pitt, the film also boasts of a cast that includes Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Bernie Mac, and Oscar winner Julia Roberts.
During the film’s production, a decision was made to change one scene following the 9/11 attacks. Originally, there was a scene involving the demolition of the New York Hotel and Casino. This was changed to a Vegas hotel instead.
3 Troy, $483,152,040
In this 2004 cinematic version of Homer’s Iliad, Pitt plays the warrior Achilles who is forced to carry out the orders of King Agamemnon. The film features an epic fight scene between Pitt’s character and Eric Bana’s Hector.
And amidst the film’s success, there’s a part of Pitt that wishes he didn’t do the film. The actor told the New York Times. “I had to do Troy because — I guess I can say all this now — I pulled out of another movie and then had to do something for the studio.”
2 Mr. And Mrs. Smith, $486,14,090
This 2005 film marks the first time that Pitt had ever worked with Angelina Jolie. In Mr. and Mrs. Smith, they play husband and wife who experience a troubling time in their marriage after years of trying to conceal their true identities from one other.
Pitt famously divorced his first wife, Jennifer Aniston, soon after working on this film. This led to speculation that the co-stars started seeing each other while working on the film. Although they denied this, Jolie told Vogue that they both realized that there is “something more than we’d earlier allowed ourselves to believe.”
1 World War Z, $531,514,650
This 2013 film was years in the making for Pitt. Back in 2006, Pitt’s production company, Plan B, optioned a novel by Max Brooks entitled World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War. From there, the production ran into some problems.
For starters, the film’s 40-minute last act needed to be reshot. In addition, the film ended up with significantly high production costs, which are estimated to be $190 million. While speaking with USA Today, Pitt said that World War Z is “the biggest film I’ve done, period.” As far as the box office is concerned, it is indeed.
