Of all the incredible secrets hidden throughout the Kingdom of Hyrule, it is within The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s four Divine Beasts that the most tragic one of all is found. Nearly four years after its release, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild still keeps on delivering the surprises and hidden gems.

The Divine Beasts, and their Champion pilots, were instrumental in Hyrule’s fight against Ganon. In the memories uncovered as Links quests through Hyrule during Breath of the Wild, the bond between the Champions and their Beasts is unfurled to the player. It is unique and special for each champion. Unfortunately, though, during the Great Calamity the four Champions of Hyrule were defeated by Ganon, leaving the Kingdom vulnerable. Eventually, with the Divine Beasts corrupted, and an unconscious Link placed into the Shrine of Resurrection, Hyrule succumbed Calamity Ganon and his masses.

It has transpired that the Champions of Hyrule may have in fact sent out one final plea for aid before their untimely end. On the online video game forum Reset Era, member Jadow expressed his astonishment that, hidden within each of the Divine Beast’s theme tunes, the Morse code SOS signal can be heard playing, as recorded and stitched together by Tristan Cooper. If true, this is truly tragic, as players of Breath of the Wild will know that this message was not received by anyone. The Champions knew that their end was immanent, and the visceral fear they must have felt as they sent out this final message is devastating. Even though this message was actually first discovered soon after the games release, the reaction to Jadow’s post proves that even the most prolific of Zelda fans may have missed the subtle detail left by Nintendo.

This is not the only heart wrenching Easter Egg hidden by the game developers. The late Robin Williams, who famously named his daughter Zelda after the eponymous Princess and, alongside her, fronted Nintendo’s advertising for Ocarina of Time’s 3DS release, also has an unofficial cameo in Breath of the Wild. If players venture to the Foothill Stable area at the South of Death Mountain, they will come across an NPC by the name of Dayto. The eyes and wrinkles around this character’s lips are uncannily the same as the comic actors.

Next month’s release of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has promised to provide gamers a deeper insight to the stories and cast first met in Breath of the Wild. With the four Champions confirmed as playable characters alongside Link, Impa and Princess Zelda, more may be revealed then by Nintendo as to how these potential heartbreaking SOS messages came to be.
