Bridgerton Featuring Polin in Season 3 is a Mistake Heres Why

The following contains spoilers for Bridgerton Season 2, now streaming on Netflix.

Since the pilot episode of Netflix’s Bridgerton, Penelope Featherington has been shown to harbor unrequited feelings for Colin Bridgerton. Following a series of novels by Julia Quinn, each season of Bridgerton focuses on the romance of a different Bridgerton sibling. The first season was Daphne’s, Anthony’s second season outdid the first, and the third season will be Colin’s. Like in the books, Colin’s love interest is going to be Penelope. Unlike the books, though, Colin’s love story is going to be told ahead of Benedict’s.

The third book in Quinn’s Bridgerton series is called An Offer From a Gentleman and tells the love story of Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Beckett. Sophie works as a maid in the Bridgerton household, but she meets Benedict one night at a masquerade ball. In what becomes a sort of Cinderella story, Benedict falls madly in love with the woman he met that night and goes searching for her, not realizing that she’s been right there all along. Bridgerton Season 3 is supposed to be Benedict’s season, and it is a true oversight to give it to Colin instead.

After having his heart broken by Marina Thompson (now Crane) in Season 1, Colin took some time to travel abroad. While he was away, he and Penelope exchanged letters — but it was only romantic on Penelope’s side. When he did appear in Season 2, Colin was frequently talking about his travels. He also tried to invest in Jack Featherington’s gem and gold mines before finding out that Jack was a fraud. Colin’s most significant moments in Season 2 involved getting Benedict high and finally talking things out with Marina. He still has a lot of self-discovery and growing up to do, and he’s not ready for his romance with Penelope yet. Even if he were, Colin has hardly had the chance to develop feelings for Penelope.

Penelope also became rather unlikable over the course of Bridgerton’s second season. She was constantly sneaking around as Lady Whistledown and lying to Eloise, ultimately ruining things between Eloise and Theo. She and Eloise got into a massive fight when Eloise discovered that Penelope was Lady Whistledown. To make matters worse, Penelope then overheard Colin telling a group of guys that he would never court her. Penelope needs to have major character development of her own before the audience will be able to root for her again, and that starts by repairing her friendship with Eloise. Both characters need at least another season before Polin is a believable central pairing.

In Bridgerton’s last season, Colin specifically said that he just sees Penelope as a sister and he has no interest in courting her. Not only will Colin have to make up for hurting Penelope’s feelings, but he will also have to see her in a romantic way before they can be the show’s romantic leads. In order to mend Penelope and Eloise’s friendship, to give Colin the chance to develop feelings for Penelope and to give Penelope a redemption arc, Bridgerton would need to push Polin back to Season 4. In Season 3, everything is going to feel very rushed and unsatisfying.

But as opposed to his younger brother, Benedict is ready to find love. He wrote and recited a beautiful love poem last season while trying to help Anthony with his romantic dilemmas. Benedict is prepared to meet Sophie, and if he has to wait another season, his plot might become too spread out. Season 3 has its work cut out for it, but hopefully it won’t end up regretting choosing Colin and Penelope over Benedict and Sophie.
