Bridgerton RegéJean Page May Never Return As Simon Says Shonda Rhimes

Executive producer on Netflix’s Bridgerton, Shonda Rhimes, has suggested that Regé-Jean Page might never return to the series. Based on Julia Quinn’s book series of the same name, Bridgerton is a period drama which focuses on the aristocratic Bridgerton family and their romantic exploits. The series, set in Regency-era London, released on Netflix in 2020 on Christmas day and went on to win audiences over with its portrayal of drama, complicated romance, and mystery.

Up until the release of Squid Game, Bridgerton was Netflix’s most watched original series, becoming a huge and unexpected success. Along with Phoebe Dynevor, Page, who starred in the series’ first season as Simon, the Duke of Hastings, was one of the show’s breakout stars. The actor had previously worked on big projects (even having a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1), but it was his role in the Netflix series that introduced him to a global audience. Since then, he has established a wide fanbase and secured multiple major roles in upcoming films.

Now, in an interview with Variety, Rhimes has explained why Page is unlikely to return to the role of Simon Bassett. The show’s creators have suggested that there could be eight seasons of Bridgerton, and when Rhimes was asked whether she thought he would appear in any of them, she said “I don’t think so!” The executive producer reflected on Page’s success, stating that while she acknowledged fans being upset at his departure, the actor’s “an enormous star now.” Check out Rhimes’ comments below:

“As I like to say, the idea that we would write Regé to stand around in the background doesn’t make any sense at all to me. What would he do? is what I like to say… He said, ‘I signed up to do this one lovely story, this closed-ended storyline. I’m good!’. And I don’t blame him for that. I think that he was really smart to leave the perfection as the perfection.”

Rhimes’ comments clarify that Page really has left Bridgerton for good, as well as the reasoning behind his decision. Fans will hope that season two of Bridgerton can live up to the success of the first despite the absence of Page, and they won’t have to wait too long to find out. Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington, recently confirmed that Bridgerton season 2 has finished filming and will soon be entering post-production. While no official release date has been set for the second season, it looks likely that the show will return to screens at some point in 2022.

The first season ended with some shocking revelations, including the identity of Lady Whistledown, so audiences will be expecting plenty of drama – even in Page’s absence. Very little has been revealed about Bridgerton’s second season, other than that it will focus on Anthony Bridgerton, so viewers have lots to speculate about. Despite Rhimes’ confirmation of Page’s departure from Bridgerton, fans will continue to hope that they’ll see Page as the Duke on screen again, even if it’s just for a cameo.
