Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl 10 Pokémon To Use Against Oreburgh Gym Leader Roark

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl have finally arrived and players are avidly scurrying to make their best teams. This time around, many players are trying new combinations instead of the same lineups of old. By the time players reach the first Gym in Oreburgh City, they won’t have encountered many Pokémon. Still, there are plenty of opportunities to utilize other species away from just the starters.

There are Pokémon that can’t contribute much at this early stage, such as Kricketot and Starly due to their type disadvantages. However, there are plenty of other alternatives that can work together to achieve victory against Roark and his Rock-types.

10 Turtwig Can Ease Past Roark’s Rocks

Due to its super-effective type matchup, the Grass-type starter, Turtwig, is one of the main options to take on Roark and his Rock-types. With Leafage and Razor Leaf, Turtwig should make quick work of the Oreburgh Gym, as Grass is strong against both Rock and Ground-types.

The Grass-type starter line bolsters its move-pool after leaving Oreburgh, but the limited options at the start of the game are still good enough. Turtwig can even afford to use Withdraw several times at the beginning of the battle against the ineffective Geodude and set up for the rest of the bout.

9 Ground & Rock-types Are A Cinch For Piplup

Choosing Piplup as the Sinnoh starter almost speaks for itself, due to the obvious advantages that STAB Water-type moves bring to the table against Ground and Rock-types.

Piplup’s Water Gun offense and the use of Charm to lower its opponent’s Attack should give players an easy path to obtaining the first Gym Badge. Piplup evolves later than the likes of Chimchar, so Prinplup and its stronger moves are available at this stage, albeit at a vastly overleveled state.

8 Chimchar Evolves Into Monferno At Level 14 To Get That STAB Fighting Offense

Rock-type Gyms are commonly seen early on in several Pokémon games. Theoretically, this should encourage players not to select the Fire-type starter due to their type disadvantage to Rock-types. However, when preparing for the first Gym Leader of Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, Oreburgh City’s Roark, Chimchar is a viable option.

Chimchar learns Power-Up Punch as a Chimchar at level 12 and can provide useful offense despite not having the STAB Fighting-type boost. Additionally, if the player opts to level up further to level 14, then Chimchar will evolve into Monferno, the dual Fighting and Fire-type Pokémon. Despite the STAB boost that Monferno now receives, the player will still have to be wary of Rock and Ground-type moves, ultimately relying on brute force to get past Roark.

7 Bidoof Can Put Up A Fight With Rock Smash But Can Also Evolve Into A Water-Type With Some Overleveling

Bidoof is often overlooked and considered the plain and boring Normal-type encounter at the start of the game, as is a tradition in the Pokémon series. Bidoof can actually become a usable battler as long as the player finds one with a usable Nature, ideally with boosted Attack or Special Attack.

There are two ways that Bidoof can pull its weight in the battle against Roark. The first is to teach it the TM Rock Smash, a Fighting-type move obtained from the Hiker at Oreburgh Gate, which can inflict substantial damage with an Adamant Nature. The second is to train it to level 16, with Bidoof evolving into the Normal and Water-type Bibarel, subsequently learning Water Gun.

6 Restricting Roark’s Attacks With Shinx’s Intimidate Can Make The Battle Much Easier

As an Electric-type, Shinx isn’t a particularly conventional Pokémon to bring to a Gym with Rock, Steel, and Ground-types a plenty. However, as a support Pokémon, Shinx can pull its weight in this scenario. Found as early as Route 202, Shinx’s Intimidate ability reduces the opponent’s Attack stat, making it a perfect tool to work around any deadly offense from foes.

Players can switch in Shinx to contain Cranidos and its aggressive physical offense, making it less of a threat and therefore easier to overcome. Cranidos’ Ground-type move of Bulldoze would be a problem, but Shinx’s role in this battle would already be finished.

5 Machop Smashes Through Rock-Types With Ease

Other than Chimchar and its evolved form of Monferno, the only other Fighting-type Pokémon available at this stage of the game is Machop. Machop can be found to the north of Oreburgh City on Route 207.

With Machop only having weaknesses to Flying, Psychic, and Fairy-types, it doesn’t have to worry about any super-effective moves coming its way in this battle. Other than absorbing some damage from Onix due to it surviving one hit with its Sturdy ability, and the possibility of Cranidos using Bulldoze once, Machop will likely breeze through the fight with its aggressive Fighting-type moves.

4 Onix Soaks Up Rock-Based Offense But Has To Be Wary Of Cranidos’ Bulldoze

While there are certainly more obvious ways to defeat Roark and his Rock-type Pokémon, the Oreburgh Mine presents the player with an opportunity to use Rock-types against Roark effectively. Here, the player can catch an Onix of their own, which only has to be wary of Cranidos and its Ground-type move of Bulldoze.

Aside from Onix being able to defend well against Rock and Normal-type moves, Onix can also learn Rock Smash. Despite not having the valuable STAB boost from its Fighting typing, it can whittle down the HP of Roark’s Pokémon while also lowering their defense. Alternatively, Onix can also learn Dragon Breath in time for this battle for even more variation.

3 Geodude Can Bring More To The Table Than Onix Offensively

Geodude is another encounter opportunity similar to Onix found in the Oreburgh Mine while being both Rock and Ground-type. It also has to beware of Cranidos, but Geodude can learn Rock Smash as well. Geodude typically has better base Attack stats than Onix but is also slower and less defensive, meaning that it can be more of a threat offensively despite having to be wary of enemy counterattacks.

2 Budew Can Cause Chaos For The Rock-Types With Its HP-Sucking Offense

For players who don’t opt for the Grass-type start Turtwig, a Grass-type Pokémon can be found early on to the north of Jubilife City on Route 204, in Budew. With the prospect of having its fully evolved form of Roserade down the line, Budew can become a solid early-game addition to any team. Budew may not have the strongest attacking capabilities, but finding a way to use Growth once or twice to up the Special Attack before using Absorb can be a great way of getting through the Rock-type Gym.

1 Psyduck Is A Rare Encounter But Definitely Worth The Patient Searching

A Pokémon many players don’t know is available before the Oreburgh Gym Battle against Roark is Psyduck. Psyduck is a rare encounter in the Ravaged Path, north of Jubilife City. Although the player won’t get very far without being able to use Rock Smash outside of battle, they can still find a Psyduck among all the Zubat and Geodude.

Psyduck is a Water-type that immediately cements itself as an obvious counter for Roark and his Rock-types. Psyduck learns Water Gun early and learns Water Pulse at level 12, allowing it to sweep through the first Gym by itself with relative ease.
