Brooklyn 99 Why Captain Holt Got Demoted In Season 6

At the end of Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6, Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher) was demoted — why? Over the years, the 99th Precinct leader has developed a genuine kinship with his squad and vice-versa, so the handful of times he had to leave his post were difficult for all involved. Things are different, however, in his season 6 career move, as he’s downgraded from a captain to a beat cop.

This isn’t the first time that Captain Holt changed position since arriving at the 99th Precinct. In Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 2, he was forced out of his station by his arch-nemesis, Madeleine Wuntch (Kyra Sedgwick), who promoted him to become the Head of Public Relations of the NYPD. He and Gina (Chelsea Peretti), who opted to remain as his secretary, eventually found their way back to the squad. However, a string of subsequent events also resulted in Holt hiding in Florida with Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and a leave of absence that almost led to early retirement. Throughout all this, Holt has maintained his rank in the NYPD — until Wuntch pulled another trick on him.

After executing an elaborate plan that involved teaming up with Wuntch and some other questionable characters, Holt and his team were able to successfully take down NYPD Commissioner John Kelly (Phil Reeves) in the Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 finale, “The Suicide Squad.” To offer his sincere thanks to Wuntch, he visited her new office as she became the interim commissioner while the organization looked for a permanent replacement to their ousted leader. Unfortunately, what appeared to be the perfect opportunity for the enemies to put their rivalry behind them was wasted when Wuntch decided to demote Holt on the spot. The NBC sitcom didn’t allow their whole conversation to play out on screen, but the idea is that Wuntch’s decision stemmed from Holt supposedly getting promoted to a detective without having served enough time as a regular police officer.

Based on Wuntch and Holt’s pranking history, the latter could’ve easily justified the demotion. What’s interesting is, Holt didn’t seem to fight it as he would normally do when Wuntch would use her superiority to bully him. Perhaps there’s another reason why Holt was more accepting to the decision — something that has to do with his people at the 99th Precinct. It’s worth noting that during this whole time, Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) was also on the brink of being transferred to a new station. Due to budgetary reasons, the new Lieutenant was going to be moved to Staten Island — until suddenly, the decision was reversed. Brooklyn Nine-Nine didn’t explain why he’s suddenly staying, but between this and Holt’s demotion, it’s possible that the captain struck a deal with Wuntch: he’ll serve his time as a uniformed officer, but she must pull some strings so Terry can stay in the 99.

Holt’s time as a beat cop came to an end in Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 7, episode 8, “Ding Dong,” when Wuntch unexpectedly dies. That said, just because Wuntch is already gone, doesn’t mean that she did not plan ahead for some surprise pranks for his arch enemy. In any case, now that Holt is back in the 99, all is back to normal again with squad.
