10 Many Celebrities Tweeted In Support of The Show’s Renewal

After Fox decided to cancel Brooklyn Nine-Nine after just five seasons, the fans took to Twitter to voice their anger and disappointment and pleaded with many networks such as Netflix and Hulu, in the hopes of renewing it. Even celebrities tweeted their support for giving the show a second life.

Notable celebrities included Hamilton creator Lin Manuel Miranda (who went on to play David Santiago, Amy’s brother), Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, and visionary director Guillermo Del Toro.

9 Scully and Hitchcock are Named After the Show’s Producers

The laziest and most useless detectives of the 99th precinct, Norm Scully and Michael Hitchcock are best friends. The pair are named after the writers and producers of the show, Norm Hiscock and Mike Scully, who were also consulting writers on Michael Schur’s previous sitcom, Parks and Recreation.

Although Hitchcock and Scully appear to be worthless, they are somewhat skilled, as they managed to solve Boyle’s case when they put in effort. However, having seen their fair share of the action in the ’70s and ’80s, they are now content to simply do their paperwork and nap in the break room.

8 Melissa Fumero Was A Dancing Teacher Before Becoming An Actor

Amy Santiago is a brilliant and accomplished detective, but if there’s one thing she can’t do, it’s dance. She manages to step on both of Jake’s feet at the same time during a dance competition in season 1, and her dance-off with her brother David in season 6 is simply hilarious.

However, unlike her on-stage alter-ego, Melissa Fumero, who plays Amy, is actually a professionally trained dancer, ever since she was a kid. Before becoming a famous actress, she was a dance instructor until her late twenties.

7 Despite Being Set in Brooklyn, The Series Is Entirely Shot in L.A.

Even though the show is about the 99th police precinct in Brooklyn, filming doesn’t take place in Brooklyn. In fact, the NYPD doesn’t even have a 99th precinct. The building used for the exterior shots of the 99 is actually the 78th precinct in Brooklyn.

Filming takes place in the CBS Studio Center in Los Angeles, California. It’s quite surprising, seeing how perfectly the show manages to capture and recreate the feeling of New York.

6 The Character of Gina Was Created Specifically For Chelsea Peretti

Before starring as Gina in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Chelsea Peretti was a stand-up comedian and writer for Parks and Recreation. She even made an appearance as Zelda, a citizen of Pawnee, in “Live Ammo,” an episode she co-wrote. Michael Schur created the role of Gina specifically for Chelsea Peretti.

Her character also incorporates certain traits of Chelsea. For example, Chelsea and Andy Samberg have been close friends since elementary school, and Gina and Jake have also been friends since childhood. Fans are hoping Gina will make an appearance in season 8 after Peretti left the show in season 6.

5 The Story Behind “Shh! Not A Doctor.” and The Voice Behind “Fremulon”

A true Brooklyn Nine-Nine fan stays way past the end credits scene so they can hear “Shh! Not a doctor.” Dan Goor revealed in a tweet that he was a biochemistry major who was enrolled in a med school but got a writer gig on The Daily Show two weeks before it started, which is where the name Dr. Goor Productions and the catchphrase comes from.

Michael Schur says the phrase “Shh! Not a Doctor,” while Nick Offerman says “Fremulon” (in his iconic voice, one might add). There’s even a hilarious website that answers the very same question – www.doesnickoffermansayfremulon.com.

4 Andy Samberg Almost Passed On The Show

It’s hard to imagine Brooklyn Nine-Nine without Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta, but this was almost the case. When he left Saturday Night Live in 2012, Andy Samberg didn’t want to do TV shows and wanted to focus on his movie career so he could have a more relaxed schedule, after seven grueling but wonderful years on SNL.

However, after reading the script and thinking about what Michael Schur’s Parks and Rec did for Amy Poehler’s career, he felt the opportunity was “too good to pass up.” He decided to go through with it, and the rest, as they say, is history.

3 Terry’s Oil Painting Of Captain Holt

The role of Terry Jeffords was created specifically with Terry Crews in mind, which is why the character takes on some of the traits of the actor. Both are very talented artists, as Terry Crews has been sketching and painting for years before becoming an actor. He revealed in an interview with Ad Age that his first job was as a courtroom sketcher.

Amy asks Sarge to draw a portrait of Captain Holt to improve his mood, but the Captain thinks it’s arrogant to have a portrait of oneself and refuses to accept it. However, he later accepts the painting and gives it to Kevin, and it can be seen hanging in his office at Columbia University when Jake goes to visit him.

2 Andre Braugher Improvised the “Hot Damn!”

The cast says that improvising their lines is encouraged by the writers and the showrunners. Andre Braugher revealed that the cast and crew often shoot their scenes 3-4 times, each time improvising a few lines. The funniest take is then used for the episode.

In the scene where Amy is late for work, Andre Braugher improvises Captain Holt shouting “Hot Damn!” and the scene cuts right before Andy Samberg can be seen bursting out laughing.

1 Gina Says She Would Rather Get Hit By A Bus Than Get A Text From Charles – And She Does

After Boyle finds out there are dozens of group chats among his co-workers, he asks Amy and Gina why he isn’t in any of them. They tell him he’s an over texter, and Gina says she would “Rather get hit by a bus than receive a text from him,” foreshadowing Gina’s terrible accident.

Throughout the episode, they try to coach Charles on how to appropriately text. At the end of the episode, Gina is walking across the street and pulls out her phone to read a text from Charles, and gets hit by a bus she was too busy reading Charles’s text to see.
