10 Jake And Amy’s Romance Wasn’t Good

The evolution of Jake and Amy’s relationship from co-workers to a lovey-dovey couple is a big part of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Although they are wildly different in some ways, they’re one of the best couples on the show. However, one Reddit user disagrees as evidenced by their comment highlighting their dislike of Jake and Amy’s romance.

It took a while for Amy and Jake to finally admit they had feelings for each other and the slow-burn romance between them was something most of the audience enjoyed but some—understandably—found it frustrating. Interestingly, some fans don’t like these episodes as one Redditor stated that those are actually their least favorites on the show and always the ones they skip on a rewatch. The heists certainly bring out the characters’ worst, competitive sides, leading to betrayals that can be painful and frustrating to watch so this opinion is understandable even if it’s not a common one.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine did a good job of showing each character’s individualism. All the characters have unique traits, from Charles’s yes-man tendencies to Rosa’s reluctance to show her emotions. Jake rarely takes things seriously while Amy takes things a little too seriously.

In season 2 Jake dated Sophia, a Defense Attorney, and it was considered scandalous at the time because they were typically on opposite sides of criminals. Jake arrested them and Sophia helped set them free. Their jobs were ultimately the major reason they couldn’t be together. With Amy, on the other hand, the two had the same jobs and their passions and objectives aligned.

Still, there’s a small population of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine fandom that shipped Jake and Sophia. The two definitely had good chemistry and similar characteristics, like their taste in movies and strange foods. If they had found a way around their work differences, they might actually have made a good couple.

4 Doug And Jake’s Friendship Is Unrealistic

Doug’s criminal ways make his friendship with Jake odd but enjoyable. Every time Jake catches him, he negotiates a deal to help him catch a bigger fish and then betrays him at the last minute. Despite that, Doug is practically Jake’s unofficial best friend and fans love their dynamic.

3 “Now Number Five” Is Overrated

The funny Brooklyn Nine-Nine cold opens are one of the best parts of the show. They set the comedic tone for the episode, even though most of what happens hardly connects to the main parts of the episode. The cold open in the season 5 episode, “DFW” where Jake asks criminals in a lineup to sing “I Want It That Way” by Backstreet Boys in order to identify a murderer is a leading favorite for many fans and possibly the first one that comes to mind.

Contrary to popular opinion, one Redditor feels that while that cold open is funny, it’s severely overrated by fans of the show. There’s a lot of hype over it that it may be too much and undeserved, even though most fans enjoy the scene every time it comes up.

2 “The Box” Is An Overrated Episode

With seven seasons so far, the show has over 100 episodes under its belt. Some of those performed better than others in terms of rating and one example is “The Box” from season 5. Jake and Holt spent the entire night trying to get a dentist (Sterling K Brown) to confess to murdering his partner and ultimately succeeded after some hilarious antics.

There were many reasons why this episode was popular, from the celebrity appearance to the bottle episode format and having the sole focus on one of the show’s best duos. However, one fan on Reddit commented that it’s a good episode but undeserving of all the hype or high ratings it gets. Their reasoning was that the confession was obtained in an unoriginal way that wasn’t worthy of the “oh damn” reaction it got.

As far as sitcoms go, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of the popular ones. It’s right up there with other comedies like The Big Bang Theory and Parks and Recreation. Many who watch the show love the characters and that it doesn’t rely on a laugh track to be funny. Considering the passionate campaign for it to be saved after Fox canceled it, there’s no doubt fans love the comedic police procedural.
