Brooklyn NineNine Each Main Characters First & Last Lines

The eighth and final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine had the chaos and hilarious hijinks of the iconic 99th precinct squad that fans have loved since the show first aired in 2013. With 14 awards and 116 nominations under its belt, the beloved sitcom is a favorite of many because of its wide-ranging plot and the brilliant actors who bring the stories to life. From fan-favorites like Jake and Holt to the lovably goofy Scully, the show has a plethora of characters who are simultaneously relatable and entertaining.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine wrapped up with some wholesome full-circle moments showing how the characters evolved between solving cases and the chaotic fun of their Halloween heists. While characters like Jake and Amy changed significantly from the detectives they were upon their introduction, others—like Hitchcock—barely changed but their journeys through the seasons were no less remarkable. All this is reflected in the first lines that set up who they were and the last lines that showed who they’d become.

10 Kevin

“Evening, so glad you could make it.” – “We really have to go.”

The first time Kevin met the squad, he welcomed them with a polite, cold greeting. Although his feelings towards them changed by the end of the episode, he maintained formality whenever he interacted with them. Like Holt, this was just the way his character was for most of the show.

His last line came before the finale when he urged Holt to rush through their wedding and go to One Police Plaza with evidence they recovered. Seeing him prioritize a case over their wedding was such a contrast to his first appearance when he wouldn’t even tolerate cop talk in his home, showing Kevin’s personal growth into a more supportive and understanding partner.

9 Scully

“That’s the butt.” – “I left it there for you.”

Scully was the laziest detective in the squad and rarely paid attention to anything happening around him unless it was food-related. His first line was proof of this as his guess of what a vandal was drawing on cop cars was so obviously wrong.

Although Scully didn’t pay much attention to work, he was attentive to Hitchcock and their shared love of food. His last line in reference to the wing sauce he left under his collar for him highlights this. Even though his work ethic only got worse, the best part of his personality—his friendship with Hitchcock—remained the same.

8 Hitchcock

“That takes all the fun out of it.” – “That’s true, it felt wrong.”

Hitchcock was notorious for inappropriate comments but his first and last lines were fairly innocent. The first was in a flashback with Rosa when she demanded to know her Secret Santa and he initially refused to tell her because it would ruin the fun.

Those games and heists were all he fully participated in and enjoyed at work. By that logic, it seemed only fitting that he won the final heist, even though the others, himself included, said it was odd. While he was hardly the most likable character on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, he was an honest person throughout—even when it meant admitting he didn’t deserve the win.

7 Gina

“Okay, two points to make here.” – “As am I, Gina Linetti.”

Gina’s brutal honesty was highlighted in her first line when she bluntly told Charles not to ask Rosa out because she’d never agree and he wasn’t her type. In fact, almost everything Gina said on the show was a dig at someone, especially since she considered herself way cooler than most of the squad.

Despite how often she belittled the others, she always joined them whenever they played games. Of course, she was always the most flamboyant of the crew, in particular with her over-the-top appearances. In the finale, she was present for the proposed heist in an elaborate disguise until she unmasked herself to join the game.

6 Charles

“I think it was flan.” – “Oh, I like that.”

When Jake showed the squad a picture of an old lady with something on her face, Charles suggested it was flan. As the biggest foodie on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, it was only fitting that his first line was food-related. He always slipped food into the conversation, even when it didn’t make sense. Besides his culinary obsession and inappropriate comments, another part of Charles’ personality was how he worshipped Jake.

His last line was in response to Larkin’s suggestion that they label themselves “Detective Boyle and his little butcher buddy.” The conversation was reminiscent of most of Charles’ interactions with Jake and their alpha-beta-like dynamic, bringing his character full circle.

5 Terry

“J.P. Update on the Morgenthau murder?” – “Nine, Nine!”

Terry started out as a sergeant and his first scene was in the briefing room asking for updates on a case from Jake and giving out assignments. It was a good first impression of his character in a position of power, showing that he took his job seriously even while others were goofing around.

However, he had moments where he was as playful as Jake. His final scene, for example, was in the briefing room again, but this time he was addressing his squad as the captain. And when Jake and the others called for another heist, he used one of the best quotes of the show to say he was all in. No matter his rank, Terry was always a family man, especially with his squad.

4 Rosa

“Maybe it was just old person gunk.” – “Me too.”

Unlike her character, Rosa’s first lines weren’t memorable. While the line wasn’t remarkable, her comment on what was on the old woman’s face in the photo Jake shared was on-brand with the snarky personality that fans of Brooklyn Nine-Nine loved about Rosa.

By the time the show ended, Rosa was no longer a cop. In spite of that, she always helped her friends with work and personal stuff and she was present in the final scene to join the heist. Like most of the squad, Rosa had a familial bond with the rest of them, especially because of the support they showed her through the seasons.

3 Holt

“Is that what you think?” – “The old janitor, which is actually me, Deputy Commissioner Raymond Holt.”

When Brooklyn Nine-Nine began, it was Holt’s first day as Captain. Before Jake met him, he assumed Holt was a washed-up pencil pusher who followed orders like a robot. Holt overheard him and the robot thing became a running gag between them.

By the finale, he was still dedicated to his job but he was part of the fun stuff too, occasionally. His last line had him showing up for the annual Halloween heist, disguised in a janitor’s uniform, which was a big contrast from the man Jake thought he was in the pilot.

2 Amy

“Hey! What are you doing weirdo?” – “I’m in, too.”

Although Jake and Amy eventually became one of the show’s favorite couples, they started out as complete opposites. In their first appearance together at a crime scene, she was reprimanding Jake for acting weird and not taking the case as seriously as she was.

Being obsessively focused 0n work was one of Amy’s worst traits on Brooklyn Nine-Nine but as she grew closer to Jake, she joined his crazy schemes and silly pranks. By the finale, her years of hard work finally paid off and she was promoted to Chief, but that didn’t stop her from being part of another Halloween heist.

1 Jake

“This job is eating me alive.” – “Are we doing this?”

Jake’s first appearance was at a crime scene, quoting a speech from Donnie Brasco. Contrary to the quote he shared, he loved and enjoyed his job and he was good at it. The scene set up his personality as a movie-loving detective who joked around but still got the job done.

That line held more significance in the finale. Even though at the time he’d joked about his job wearing him out, that was partly how he felt in season 8 and it contributed to his decision to quit. A year later, he was no longer a cop but his fun-loving side was still a prominent aspect of his personality.
