Brooklyn NineNine Star is Confident Show Will Return

Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews sounds confident that the show will return. Premiering in 2019, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur. The sitcom follows a team of New York City detectives and police officers, chronicling their work and interpersonal relationships. But, over the course of eight seasons, the series evolved and was praised for the chemistry of its characters such as Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher) and the lackadaisical Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg). Viewers also enjoyed the comedy’s inventive cold opens and always elaborate heist episodes.

After a total of 153 episodes, and a high-profile change of networks, from Fox to NBC, Brooklyn Nine-Nine came to a close this past September. The show concluded with one of its famous heists. Except, this time, rather than simply use the heist as a way to see which character would outsmart the others, the sitcom used the conceit to say an occasionally poignant and frequently hilarious goodbye to the world that it explored for eight years. Crews, who played Terry Jeffords, has now said that the Brooklyn Nine-Nine team could reconvene to tell more stories in the future.

Speaking with ET, to promote his role in the new animated movie Rumble, Crews discussed the possibility of reviving the popular cop comedy. Far from downplaying it, the actor seemed to think it was inevitable that the show would make a comeback eventually and noted that his co-stars would be up for it. Crews said that, specifically, the existence of a streaming service like Peacock bolstered the chances of continuing Brooklyn Nine-Nine and its memorable heists. You can read Crews’ quote below.

“I think everyone is open to it. When you look at what streaming is doing and you also look at how many shows have been brought back. I mean, it’s wild now. They are bringing back Diff’rent Strokes and Facts of Life in different iterations. We know that there is going to be a comeback sometime and especially now that Peacock is creating their own entertainment, I could see a Brooklyn Nine-Nine movie. We could do a heist episode every year. That would be hot.”

There are a few things worth keeping in mind, as it relates to any possible continuation. The first is that the finale was well-received by fans and there’s always a risk of sullying that by continuing the story past where it needs to go. But, far more importantly, the end of the series came at a time when pop culture’s tendency to depict law enforcement in a largely unassailable and positive light came under scrutiny due to real incidents of police violence that are all too common. Brooklyn Nine-Nine, in attempting to depict this reality, came away with mixed results.

Still, keeping those considerations in mind, Brooklyn Nine-Nine does leave the door somewhat open to a continuation. The series finale promises that the characters continue to meet, at least once a year, to keep their old routines alive. It would be easy enough to build something from that point. And by the sounds of things, from Crews’ comments, to the cast’s willingness, to the reliable trend of reviving old properties, it may indeed just be a matter of time until some sort of reboot is announced for Peacock.
