Bruce Wayne Wouldve Been A Total Coward if His Parents Werent Killed

Warning! Spoilers for Batman/Superman #18!

In DC Comics, Batman is often considered to be the true face of Bruce Wayne, and in an altered reality where the incident that triggered his long journey towards vigilantism never happened, Bruce has not only eschewed donning the iconic cape and cowl, but has also become a total coward on top of it, too. Suffice it to say, calling him a mama’s boy in this reality would be an understatement.

Picking up the story as the “real” Batman and Superman battle a villain who has the means to toss them into a movie-like altered reality, Batman/Superman #18 by Gene Luen Yang and Ivan Reis & Jose Luis, further explores two worlds where not everything is as it seems. Coming from a world without Batman and another reality where Superman never survived his original space journey, Superman and Batman have found themselves crossing dimensional planes to help one another get to the bottom of their current predicament.

Attempting to thwart a Martha Wayne that has survived her fateful night in Crime Alley, this world’s Bruce Wayne never became Batman without the inciting incident that was her death. Acting more like a spoiled playboy than the real Bruce Wayne ever did, this reality’s Bruce is more or less a sniveling coward who clearly never grew out of his mama’s boy phase.

Quite literally cowering behind this different Martha Wayne after the Batman version of him enters Wayne Manor, Bruce can barely speak as he stutters in fear, leading Martha to shoot her own alternate bat-son in the shoulder and further making her own pushover of a kid stumble over his words as he stares terrified at the “giant bat monster” before him. As the issue continues, Bruce has the opportunity to redeem himself by shooting the fleeing Batman and Robin, but bungles the act in a way that disappoints his mother yet makes total sense when this world’s Lex Luthor calls him out for being “spineless” only a few panels later.

Being the alter ego of The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne has always had to play it safe when acting as a civilian as to not draw attention to his true skills and worth, yet always has the wherewithal to handle a situation if it ever got out of hand. Conversely, and without the death of his loved ones to push him into the realm of being a hero, this reality’s Bruce is not only a sheltered coward who lets his mother fight his battles for him, but is as full of fear and powerlessness as the criminals his real counterpart intimidates without even trying.

So while it’s true that these realities aren’t meant to last, seeing a world where Batman’s parents never died only to lead to a Bruce Wayne that’s as much of a pushover as he is a coward is something that’s interesting to see play out, even if it’s a “fake” version of the character fans know and love. And although Batman may always lament losing his family that ill-fated night, it’s clear that harrowing incident made him a better person – and hero – in the long run.
