Buckaroo Banzai Is Getting A Sequel Novel

Almost 40 years later, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension is finally getting the sequel fans of the cult classic movie have been waiting for. The film, which featured an all-star cast including Peter Weller, Ellen Barkin, John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum, and Christopher Lloyd, sadly was a little too complicated for mainstream viewers. Fox ultimately gave up trying to sell the film to a commercial audience, leading Buckaroo Banzai to become a cult classic, like many under-appreciated films of the ’80s.

After the film ended with a title card that read, “Watch for the next adventure of Buckaroo Banzai — Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League,” the movie’s passionate fanbase has clamored for an official sequel for many years. They came close a variety of times with a network TV series developed at Fox in the late-’90s and later a Buckaroo Banzai show set up at Amazon with Kevin Smith producing. Sadly, both of those projects never came to pass and only a few comic book issues have been released in the years since. The wait for that Buckaroo Banzai sequel, however, has finally come to an end.

Dark Horse Publishing has announced the news Earl Mac Rauch, who wrote the screenplay for the 1984 film and the subsequent novelization, has returned to write the long-awaited sequel novel, which after all these years, is still titled Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League.

Still mourning the losses of his beloved Penny Priddy and his surrogate father Professor Hikita, Buckaroo Banzai must also contend with the constant threat of attack from his immortal nemesis Hanoi Xan, ruthless leader of the World Crime League. To make matters worse, Planet 10 warrior queen John Emdall has sent her Lectroid legions against Earth with a brutal ultimatum. Or is her true target Buckaroo Banzai? As the apocalyptic threats continue to mount, only Buckaroo and his Hong Kong Cavaliers stand in the way of global destruction—or in the words of one of the movie’s iconic lines: “Laugh-a while you can, monkey boy!”

Unlike the existing trade paperbacks that have collected some of the comic storylines, this project is a traditional novel that runs a full 544 pages. Considering the connection fans have to the characters in the original film, Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League is probably the smartest way for Rauch to launch a sequel given that the majority of the cast is now in their late-60s to early-70s.

Though rights issues with Buckaroo Banzai derailed previous attempts at a live-action revival (Disney through their acquisition of Fox, Warner Bros., United Artists, and MGM are among the many companies who have attempted to claim rights over the franchise), it’s possible the success of this new novel could inspire the many rights-holders to settle their claims and allow this storyline to be adapted for film or TV. This would allow the cult classic to reach a new audience and bring a stronger appreciation to the original film.
