Buffy the Vampire Slayer 10 People Spike Should Have Been With (Other Than Buffy)

With his cheeky sense of humor, cool leather jacket, and bad boy attitude, Spike became a standout character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Introduced as a second-tier villain early on in the series, his search for redemption led to him being a begrudging ally to the Scooby Gang, and a love interest to The Slayer. Spike represented everything Buffy was fighting against, but her heart couldn’t resist his rakish charms.

Spike’s love for Buffy fluctuated at times, especially when his sire Drusilla would descend on Sunnydale and toy with his affections. Buffy also wasn’t the only slayer he showed interest in, despite his reputation as a dangerous enemy. As the series progressed, Spike made a number of meaningful connections within the Scooby Gang, as well as with members of his own undead cohort. Here are 10 people the perocide-haired hellion should have been with other than Buffy.

10 FAITH

Unlike Buffy, Faith wasn’t afraid to walk on the wild side of The Slayer job description. She was in the business of slaying for the thrill of it, and took great pleasure in dusting vamps, leaving the self-righteous grandstanding to the Chosen One. Though she didn’t interact with Spike often, they had obvious chemistry when they did cross paths.

When Faith briefly inhabited Buffy’s body, she took every opportunity to flirt with Spike, building on an attraction that continued when she returned to Sunnydale to fight the First Evil in her true form. Buffy was jealous of the camaraderie Faith and Spike enjoyed – two dangerous individuals on the path to redemption, with killer sense of style.

9 HARMONY

Though Harmony may not have been the sharpest axe in the Slayer toolkit, her childlike sense of wonder and enthusiasm could be endearing. She was Spike’s rebound girlfriend after Drusilla, but his reluctance to get over his past love drove a stake through their love affair, especially when he treated her badly.

Even after breaking up, they could never truly remain apart, and Harmony reunited with her “Blondie Bear” when she decided that she would make herself Buffy’s arch-nemesis. On the spin-off Angel, they engaged in a pretty salacious fling at Wolfram & Hart, proving the only thing “bigger than a breadbox” was their insatiable attraction to one another.

8 DRUSILLA

To put it mildly, Drusilla and Spike always had a complicated relationship. She “rescued him from mediocrity” in Victorian England when she wanted a plaything and he wanted to be anything but be the bloody awful poet he was. As his sire, she became not only his salvation, but the love of his life.

Unfortunately, she had her own twisted fixation with her sire, Angelus. She bounced back and forth between him and Spike, becoming more eccentric as the centuries wore on. No one quite understood Dru the way Spike did though, and had she ever been able to get over Angel and learn to accept a soul, they might have had a chance.

7 ANYA

As the two supernatural representatives in the Scooby Gang, Spike and Anya shared a special sort of kinship. They were both used to former lives as merciless killers, reveling in murder and mayhem, on a path to redemption because of their love for two humans. This allowed them to understand each other’s position as outsiders.

The heart-to-heart conversations that Spike and Anya shared throughout the series were unique because they were candid. Anya wasn’t burdened by the sort of insecurities as the rest of the Scooby Gang, which Spike appreciated, and he knew something about dating a girl no one liked (Dru), so could empathize with her feelings of neglect from Xander.

6 ANGEL

Though their relationship is often defined by hostile intentions towards one another, there’s no denying that the begrudging bond between Angel and Spike wasn’t a highlight of both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Both vampires spent hundreds of years feasting on Europe, only to come to blows over the same Slayer.

What came to define their relationship was humor. Though they couldn’t stand each other, their superhuman abilities made it so they had to work together at times, and jocularity was the only way to make it tolerable. They’ve been together as a family the longest and through the most, so one might say they’re soulmates.

5 CORDELIA

Though she was an antagonist to Buffy and the Scooby Gang initially, she eventually went from being a stuck up cheerleader to a scholar of supernatural studies. Much like Spike, she went from criticizing the Scoobies to joining their efforts, at which she proved quite effective.

Cordelia’s character left Buffy the Vampire Slayer after three seasons to join the cast of Angel, which allowed the character of Spike to fill the void of snarky troublemaker to offset the Scoobies’ ebullience. When he joined the cast of Angel, it was to fill a void left by Cordelia going into a coma.

4 GLORY

One of the most impressive Big Bads in the series, Glory had a fierce temper and an even fiercer wardrobe. She set her sights on the Buffy’s younger sister Dawn in Season 5, and thought she’d use Spike’s relationship to the youngest Summers to lure Buffy into a confrontation.

Maybe if Spike had been part of Glory’s cohort, rather than her ineffectual minions, she’d have been better prepared to take on the Scooby Gang. She suffered an embarrassing defeat, and only managed to push Buffy and Spike closer to together. Still, she was a powerful force and Spike is nothing if not a sucker for a strong woman.

3 HALFREK

Back when Anya was a proper Vengeance Demon, and flaying men alive for cheating on their spouses, she was traveling around with Halfrek, a fellow demon who also couldn’t stand to see women suffer at the hands of selfish men. Like Anya, Halfrek enjoyed her work immensely and couldn’t imagine trading in her life to be with a mortal.

Perhaps, if Halfrek had ever had a chance to be in a relationship with a vampire like Spike, rather than gauge romantic success by Anya and Xander’s coupling, she would have been willing to give up the Vengeance Demon gig.

2 FRED/ILLYRIA

Winifred Burkle was an associate at Wolfram and Hart who was the only person to believe that Spike was worth saving after he suddenly materialized in Los Angeles. She worked strenuously to help him take corporeal form, her shy disposition brightened by the innocent flirtation they shared.

Spike became extremely protective of Fred, and when she sacrificed herself to save his life and was resurrected as Illyria, his feelings never wavered. Though Illyria was intimidating in her powerful form, she still required Spike’s help, and later referred to him as her “pet”. He admitted once to loving them both, though in admittedly different ways.

1 MARIA “SPIDER” HARLEY

After the fifth season of Angel, it continued on in the world of comics, in the same fashion that Buffy the Vampire Slayer saw a Season 8 in that medium. After the fall of LA, Spike was taken by the demon lord of Beverly Hills named Non and imprisoned, but one of her followers, Spider, took a fancy to Spike and they became intimate.

When Spider broke free from Non’s thrall, she joined the Spikettes, the former female soldiers in Non’s armies that were now Followers of Spike. Unfortunately, Spike saw a time flash in which he decapitated her int he future, so he was forced to break up with her to protect her. She would use their experiences to later publish a Twilight rip off.
