The romances between Betty and Jughead and Veronica and Archie have polarized fans since the very beginning of Riverdale. Which relationship is best?

The CW’s Riverdale has plenty of mystery, suspense, drama, twists, time jumps, but most importantly, loads of romance. Through high school and into adulthood, these Archie Comics characters have loved hard, especially the two main ships: Bughead and Varchie.

The romances between Betty and Jughead and Veronica and Archie have polarized fans since the very beginning of the show. Some shippers love Bughead and their warmth and likemindedness, while others feel the relationship was rushed and Veronica and Archie have a better shot at being “endgame.”

Bughead: They Have Similar Interests

What brought the roguish Jughead and girl next door Betty together was their love for solving mysteries and bringing justice to the town. They and ran the Blue & Gold and investigated Jason Blossom’s murder together, which made the pair realize that they were fast falling for each other.

This makes them a far more interesting couple and gives them more reason to be and stay together, even through breaks and tight spots. In season 5, Betty was no longer with Jug, but she still cared enough to go hunting for him which shows that their love for scoping out things will always keep them together.

Varchie: They Have Chemistry

Nobody can deny the chemistry between Archie Andrews and Veronica Lodge. The two are magnetic, and they couldn’t keep their eyes off of each other from the moment Veronica walked into Riverdale High and met him and the gang.

For many relationships, sex is a key component, and both Archie and Veronica had plenty of passion, which made them a strong couple. Even after all this time, Varchie has never lost their spark.

Bughead: They Knew Each Other For Years

Bughead was a couple on Riverdale that made sense since they had known each other for years. Many fans believe that they were a rushed pairing, but in reality, Jughead harbored a crush on Betty for years, but she was too hung up on Archie to see it.

When she figured it out, Bettye saw a boy who had known her for years, had a knack for the same things she liked, and they could still be the best of friends while being in love. They were perfect.

Varchie: It Was Love At First Sight

There is something to be said for love at first sight, and Varchie sure had a swoon-worthy first siting. The night that Veronica swept into Pop’s Chock’Lit Shop in a dark cape and mysterious demeanor, she had Archie’s attention.

Their attraction was undeniable right from the start. They also worked through their controversial love triangle with Betty and prevailed. Cheryl may have pushed Veronica and Archie to go into a closet for Seven Minutes in Heaven, but the sparks between them were pretty real.

Bughead: They’re Emotionally Mature

Jughead and Betty were definitely the most mature teens amongst the core four, and they also treated their relationship with that kind of mutual love and respect. There were things that went wrong for Betty once she started dating Jughead, like doing the Serpent dance, but when Jughead saw things going too far, he broke up with her.

They were also committed enough to make things work when Jughead went to Stonewall Prep; Varchie definitely couldn’t have sustained a long-distance relationship.

Varchie: They’re A Classic Pair

Riverdale gets some parts of teen life wrong, but they nail the classic jock-and-cheerleader pairing. However, beyond that, Archie and Veronica are both very active members of their community and provide hubs for teens and kids to hang out.

Archie and Veronica are a classic pair that rarely goes out of style. They’re high school sweethearts whose love survived a marriage (to someone else) and seven years of separation so they’re a pretty great couple.

Bughead: They’re More Consistent And Committed

For Betty and Jughead, there is rarely anyone else in the picture. Archie distracts Betty a bit and Jug has a one-time kiss with Toni, but Bughead is very consistent about the fact that they love each other. Even going to another school like Stonewall didn’t turn Jughead’s head to other girls. Bughead is there for each other when they need it the most.

Meanwhile, Archie gets distracted by most girls which include Josie, Valerie, Cheryl, and Betty. Veronica also strays with Reggie while Archie is in prison and their romance seems a lot flakier.

Varchie: They’re Not Family

A big point that works in favor of Varchie is that they don’t share any family members. Bughead is great but they share a half-sibling that FP and Alice gave up for adoption, and for a long time, it seemed as though FP and Alice could get married, and then they would be step-siblings too.

Overall, the Andrewses are not remotely related to the Lodges, which makes their relationship less complicated than Bughead’s, who have unfortunate familial ties between them.
