California Allows Film & TV Production To Resume June 12

California declares that film and TV production can restart June 12 after months of being shut down due to coronavirus concerns. In March, the World Health Organization said the coronavirus a pandemic, causing civilizations around the world to take extra security measures against the aggressive virus. Leading to closed theme parks, movie theaters, and restaurants, coronavirus took a massive toll on the entertainment industry. Amid COVID-19 concerns, movie and television productions came to an abrupt halt.

In an attempt to prevent the spread of coronavirus, highly-anticipated titles, such as The Batman, Jurassic World 3, and The Matrix 4, were forced to halt shooting, sending stars and crew home indefinitely. After Hollywood went dark, popular TV series, including The Walking Dead and Grey’s Anatomy, delayed season finales until further notice. As of late, U.S. states are gradually lifting lockdown orders, leaving Hollywood studios to workshop how to reopen the entertainment industry. Recently, guidelines to restart movie productions amid the pandemic was formulated by an entertainment industry task force. These include physical distancing on set, actors wearing protective gear, and daily symptom monitoring. Now, it appears that Hollywood could be back in business sooner than anticipated.

Per Variety, the state of California will allow the cameras to start rolling on movie, TV and commercial productions on June 12. Today, California Governor Gavin Newsom officially gave the green light for productions to resume business, following weeks of delay in issuing guidelines. Pending approval from county public health officials, productions being allowed to return is under the jurisdiction of the local health officer. Reportedly, a significant increase in coronavirus cases and available hospital capacity are critical elements that local health officials will review before allowing movie and TV shoots to resume in Los Angeles county.

Director of the California Department of Public Health, Dr. Sonia Angell, advised residents of California to remain cautiously optimistic about Hollywood resuming business on June 12 and stated, “…is it important to remember guidance doesn’t mean ‘go.’ Your local health officer will make the final decision about which sectors will open, guided by data specific to your community.” In addition to movie and TV productions, California released guidelines that promote the reopening of schools, day camps, casinos, and sports events – sans spectators.

Despite glimmers of hope that the entertainment industry could safely reopen this month, it also remains to be seen what lasting impacts the coronavirus has created. As it stands, movie release dates continue to be shuffled around the calendar, TV series are configuring how to patch up storylines, and the 2021 Oscars may be delayed. Enforced guidelines will create differences in movie and TV productions, but would allow actors and crew to safely return to work this month.
