The upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is going to feature multiple endings and the mechanics of player choice. The announcement comes while the current series’ release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, is still going strong, mainly due to the huge success of the battle royale Warzone portion.

Interestingly, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War won’t replace Modern Warfare in the fashion it happened with all the previous releases before. Instead, content from the upcoming game will be incorporated in Warzone to give it a boost and engage the community. The multiplayer portion, however, will be brand new, and while fans are waiting for the first gameplay reveal, Warzone continues to receive regular updates. Just recently, the game was treated with a mid-season content package with some brand new stuff for players to enjoy.

During the online panel at Gamescom 2020, it was revealed that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be infused with some freedom for players – which will eventually lead to multiple endings based on decisions made during the playthrough. In an interview with the show’s host Geoff Keighley, Raven Software’s Dan Vondrak revealed how much the development team wanted to enrich the experience of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which serves as a direct sequel to the original Black Ops video game. According to Vondrak, the development team aimed at giving players a bit more ownership over their experience in the game by infusing the narrative with non-linear elements such as, for instance, the ability to create a unique character with personal background. Some of the campaign missions will include optional objectives, multiple passes, and player choice influencing the short-term and even-long-term outcomes. Essentially, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will have multiple endings, but it is yet unclear how strongly they will differ from one another.

Thanks to returning to the Cold War era, the upcoming Call of Duty game will focus on the paranoid atmosphere of the time period leading to thrilling covert operations and espionage action. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was officially revealed via a pioneering teaser a week ago. It was later accompanied by a proper trailer, which has been banned in China due to the Tiananmen Square footage that remains a highly sensitive topic for the Chinese government. Despite that unfortunate event, the game proceeds to receive new information on a regular basis. The first multiplayer gameplay reveal is expected to happen in September, while the official release is set to arrive in November.

The inclusion of multiple endings and mechanics of cause and effect in the famously linear Call of Duty franchise with the upcoming Black Ops Cold War is definitely a strong selling point. While it sounds like only some of the game’s sections will be infused with player choice, the taste of freedom is likely going to be welcomed by the community. This is not something brand new for the franchise as multiple endings were featured in the Black Ops sub-series before, but this time, the scale appears to be a lot greater. That being said, it is yet to be seen if the player choice will be incorporated in any future releases.
