Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit (content warning: rape, suicide, abuse, harassment) are being updated as new information becomes available.

Call of Duty: Vanguard has finally hit store shelves and reviews are coming in thick and fast, with most critics agreeing that this is a standard Call of Duty release that doesn’t do anything too spectacular but gets the basics right. This year’s entry in the shooter franchise comes from Sledgehammer Games and, in a nod to the series’ roots, is set in World War 2 rather than the modern settings of more recent titles.

Following an extensive beta test earlier this year, Sledgehammer Games has confirmed it is making a number of changes to multiplayer in Call of Duty: Vanguard in response to player criticism. This includes patching a range of bugs and glitches that were present but also some design choices that users reacted negatively to. Most prominent among them is an adjustment to several of the game’s visual elements, including fixing a problem with sun glare.

Now that Call of Duty: Vanguard is available to buy, reviews have started going online and impressions are generally positive. While there is little glowing praise for the game, most of the reviews agree that it has a strong Zombies mode and a solid multiplayer experience, especially with the addition of new anti-cheat measures for Call of Duty: Vanguard. Most of the criticism appears to be directed at the singleplayer campaign and its inconsistent cast of characters. Here’s a breakdown of what critics are saying about Call of Duty: Vanguard ahead of its release:

Daniel Tack – 8/10 – Game Informer

“Call of Duty: Vanguard’s campaign misses the mark, but multiplayer and Zombies do the heavy lifting to get the title to a good place. If you’re most invested in the single-player experience, you can pass on this year’s entry, but if you’re into the other modes, Call of Duty remains an excellent choice for some shooting, looting, and zombie executing.”

Wesley Yin-Poole – Eurogamer

“It feels like a stop-gap year for Call of Duty. Developer Sledgehammer Games finds itself sandwiched in-between the mega sub-brands that are Modern Warfare and Black Ops, and has produced fun filler for fans to be getting on with. There’s nothing wrong or bad or off-putting in this return to World War 2, but Vanguard does nothing exceptionally.”

Simon Cardy – 7/10 – IGN

“With a strong cast of characters used to varying effect throughout to tell a tale that puts just about enough of a spin on the stories it’s paying homage to, Call of Duty: Vanguard’s single-player campaign is an impressively cinematic depiction of World War II. That said, aside from a few standout moments sprinkled over its fleeting five hours, for the most part it plays it a little too safe in regards to mission variety to feel like a standout in the series.”

Phil Hornshaw – 7/10 – Gamespot

“Elements of Vanguard feel like good additions to the franchise, but its ideas also don’t always mix well with the series’ framework. That framework is still strong, and the solid gunplay, exciting multiplayer, and inventive moments of the campaign are worth seeking out. But forcing those two parts together exposes the seams in Call of Duty: Vanguard at times, weakening both parts of the game rather than pushing either one to the forefront.”

Ian Boudreau – 8/10 – PCGamesN

“Call of Duty: Vanguard is probably the most entertaining entry in the latest triptych (which now share a unified launch screen alongside Warzone). There aren’t many surprises to be found if you’ve already played Modern Warfare or Black Ops – Cold War, but if I were to recommend just one of the three, it would unquestionably be Vanguard.”

As seen above, one of the most enjoyable aspects of Call of Duty: Vanguard is the new Zombies mode. In keeping with the setting of the game, the co-op based mode takes place in the war-torn spaces of World War 2 and features a series of time-appropriate weapons as well as familiar favorites. Known as Der Anfang in the game, the Zombies mode will also give new context to the Dark Aether storyline.

With reviews in for Call of Duty: Vanguard, it appears as if it this a game aimed squarely at fans of the series, who will be able to ignore the problems with its singleplayer campaign and focus fully on the multiplayer elements. Those wanting a rich story with interesting characters can probably look elsewhere but the offerings in other areas look as strong as ever.
