Call of Duty Warzone Adding First ObjectiveBased Game Mode With Payload

Call of Duty: Warzone Season 4 is bringing some exciting new content to players at launch, though one of its most interesting additions is coming later on. Called Payload, the new game mode will be the first Call of Duty: Warzone playlist to be centered entirely on objective play.

Thus far, Call of Duty: Warzone playlists have ranged from team deathmatch-style conflicts to vehicle-focused battles. All keep the traditional battle royale format, though, with the focus being centered directly on squad-based action. Payload is changing that, with the 40-player game mode seeing gamers fighting over two “caravans of vehicles.” The teams will need to escort these vehicles through checkpoints or stop them in their tracks, and while no specifics are provided on team size, 20v20 would make sense.

The Verdansk 84 map will serve as the backdrop for this new mode, and it is unclear just how big these caravans are. Further, it is not specified if they can be destroyed by the defending team, though defenders can “sabotage” them. This could see the vehicles disabled for a short period of time, unable to move to the next checkpoint until they have been cooled down or repaired. However, the most interesting mechanic of the mode sees Call of Duty: Warzone’s money system utilized in a bold new way.

Call of Duty: Warzone players will be able to “purchase buildings” to help with defending or attacking, and it will be interesting to see how much of an impact this feature has. As of now, there are no details on what these buildings do, meaning that they could serve as spawn points or be filled with explosives and ammunition. On top of this, players can build and destroy “barriers,” something that adds another layer to the escort mission. Based on the mode’s description, those on defense likely build barriers to slow down the caravan, with attackers tearing them down.

The mode will also feature Call of Duty: Warzone’s contract system, allowing players to get money to help purchase buildings. It will be launching with Season 4’s midseason update, though no exact date for Season 4 Reloaded has been provided. For those looking for something new to play in Call of Duty: Warzone right when the Season starts, Verdansk Resurgence Mini should do the trick. The mode will feature 44-45 players and skip the first circle so that it is more fast paced. Loot will be higher quality, while all the other Rebirth Resurgence features will be carried over as well.

With Call of Duty: Warzone’s Ground Fall event also starting at launch, there is plenty for fans to look forward to this Season. Given how unique Payload sounds, though, it could end up being a game changer when it releases.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
