Can You Play Persona 5 Strikers Without Playing the Original and Royal

Persona has seen a wealth of spinoffs over the years, from the 2D fighting game Persona 4 Arena to the dungeon crawling adventures of Persona Q. The latest in that string is Persona 5 Strikers, an adaption from Koei Tecmo that combines Persona with the fast-paced massive battlefields of Dynasty Warriors.

While it may have similarities, Strikers is so much more than just Dynasty Warriors Persona and feels more like a proper action-RPG. Persona 5 Strikers does fall in a strange position, however, as it’s more directly related to the original game than something like Persona Q, which tells a completely separate story.

This will obviously leave some, like Dynasty Warriors fans, wondering if they need to have played all of Persona 5 to understand Strikers. The original Persona 5 is an absurdly long game, but the good news is that knowledge of the original isn’t required to enjoy Strikers.

Persona 5 Strikers Doesn’t Require Any Knowledge of the Original, But It Helps

Persona 5 Strikers is less of a spinoff and more of a direct sequel to Persona 5, but that doesn’t mean that players can’t jump right in. Nothing about the new game’s story is directly tied to the original, outside of some references and minor details. The story picks up six months after the end of Persona 5, with the group setting out on a summer vacation. Keep in mind that not playing Persona 5 means players won’t know the Phantom Thieves as well, and Persona 5 Strikers really builds off of the character development that happened in the first game. The story is about the friendship of the party enduring past everything, so there’s a lot of context the original adds to the experience. Still, it’s not absolutely necessary.

The other big question is if players need to go through Persona 5 Royal, the enhanced edition of Persona 5 released in 2020. The good news there is that Persona 5 Royal has absolutely no bearing on the story of Strikers. Royal has an extra third semester added on at the end that’s totally separate. Strikers is a sequel to the original “vanilla” Persona 5, so players don’t need to worry about needing knowledge of Royal before jumping in. Keep in mind, of course, that Strikers is a pretty different experience that lacks the social simulation of the main games, and switches combat up to full-on action-RPG.

Persona 5 Strikers launches on February 23 for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Anyone that pre-order the Digital Deluxe Edition will get early access on February 19.
