Capcom Cup Is Officially Canceled and Thats a GOOD Thing

Capcom recently announced over Twitter that the Capcom Cup and Street Fighter League World Championship would be canceled. Originally slated to take place between Feb. 19 – 21, Capcom’s decision comes after acknowledging a rising number of COVID-19 cases globally.

Capcom plans to offer an online-only Season Final to qualifying players through the Capcom Fighters Network, taking place Feb. 20 – 21. This is yet another blow to the FGC in the wake of the pandemic, but it’s a great call on Capcom’s part.

The Capcom Cup is an annual fighting game tournament that formally got its start in 2013. Though the contest is focused on Street Fighter titles, other games like Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Street Fighter X Tekken have been featured as well. Over the years, it has become known as the definitive place for competitive Street Fighter players to prove themselves as the world’s best among their peers.

Capcom’s cancelation of the event should come as no surprise to fans and players waiting to hear an official word from the source itself. COVID-19 cases have been on the rise for months across the globe, and any event that’s dependent on getting a group together indoors raises complications for participants or staff to be exposed to the virus. Though some fans have expressed disappointment with Capcom’s decision, it’s the right move to make when the risks are so high.

Capcom has since explained that the tournament’s final matches will take place virtually on the Capcom Fighters Network. While this solution sidesteps some of the worries an in-person event would bring, some fans have expressed concern over Capcom’s Fighters Network’s reliability. There’s no question that something like a high-stake fighting tournament yields the best results when both participants are in the same room and connected to wired connections, as opposed to wireless. It’s one of the main reasons why these events were still held in-person prior to the current pandemic.

The fighting game community (FGC) has had it rough during the course of COVID-19. Over the course of 2020, players saw event after event canceled as concerns over the Coronavirus grew. The first sign of trouble came when the Granblue Fantasy Versus tournament in Japan was canceled; several other high-profile events soon followed. EVO, Mortal Kombat’s Final Kombat, SNK’s King of Fighter XIV, and Samurai Shodown championships on top of the first half of Capcom Pro Tour were all called off throughout 2020.

Until a change in current technology is presented, players will always prefer in-person competition to those held online. After all, there’s nothing more frustrating to these participants than losing a fight due to latency. There are some hopes that the next generation of fighting games will be able to address some of these concerns, but until then, the pandemic has wrought havoc for the FGC and players.
