Captain America is one of the most inspirational figures in popular culture, thanks to his 80 years of adventures in Marvel Comics and many movies in the MCU. Though he’s approaching a century of active duty, Captain America hasn’t lost his power to inspire everyone that he’s worked with. From admitting when he’s wrong to rallying his forces, Cap’s moments of rallying cries tend to be remembered as some of the best moments in comics.
Currently, Captain America has become a title rather than a simple codename, which allows for people with different experiences to share their wisdom. The mantle has been passed from Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson in both the comics and the MCU. Both men have inspirational moments from Marvel Comics that represent the inherent values the codename embodies in any form he takes.
When He Knows He’s Wrong
“The Avengers should have done more to help mutants.”
One of the most inspirational things about Captain America is that he’s not afraid to admit when he’s wrong. When Captain America brought together the Avengers Unity Squad, it was because he realized the Avengers hadn’t done enough for mutants, saying “The Avengers should have done more to help mutants.”
The dichotomy in the Marvel Universe of mutants being persecuted but not superheroes like the Avengers never quite made sense. At this moment, Captain America uses the circumstance to once again show his character by joining the two teams together in the Unity Squad. He saw something that needed correcting and then went about making it happen.
When He Knows What He Stands For

There are many important versions of Captain America, and one of the most inspirational is Sam Wilson. In Captain America and the Mighty Avengers #4 from 2015, Sam inspires by highlighting the need for any and every version of Captain America to stand for his country even in its worst moments.

Captain America has never shrunk from daunting odds or any foe, which often leads to serious consequences for him. He was trapped in ice for decades, killed by an assassin’s bullet, and stripped of all his powers. Through it all, he has never given up the fight.

Captain America #130 sees Steve Rogers face off against Batroc The Leaper, one of Captain America’s most powerful villains. Despite what seems like a typical superhero showdown, it’s a story confronting the issue of student protests in the 60s and leads to Captain America inspiring by standing with the right to protest.
Captain America proves his commitment to freedom and peaceful protest by saying “There is nothing sacred about the status quo… and there never will be!” Despite seeming to represent what may seem to some like traditional American power, Captain America has never simply stood for how things were.
When He Values His Partner

Sam Wilson is one of Steve Rogers’ best friends in the MCU and in the comics. One of Captain America’s best quotes proves this. “Fight the Falcon, and you fight me too!” Steve Rogers says in Captain America #130, stating his commitment to his new friend and ally.

When He Knows The World Needs Captain America

Sam Wilson has a complicated relationship with the role of Captain America in both the comics and the MCU. But that hasn’t stopped him from inspiring others with his heroism and commitment to the ideal of Captain America. “What kind of world will this be without a Captain America?” he asks in Captain America #439.
The role and symbology of Captain America may seem dated to seem or not entirely reflective of the American experience for many, but Sam knows the value of the role and he inspires by maintaining it even while regarding it with a critical eye.
When He Won’t Compromise
“It is the dream… the hope… that makes the reality worth living.”
Politics are an inevitable conversation in a comic book about a patriotic superhero. Captain America #250, written and drawn by John Byrne, one of the best X-Men artists ever, shows how complicated a subject it can be. “It is the dream… the hope… that makes the reality worth living,” Captain America says, turning down the chance to run for President to stay in his current role.
Captain America believes above all the American Dream is inviolate, and therefore beyond compromise. He knows as President he would be inherently political and this compromising, so he turns down the opportunity.
When He Won’t Back Down
“As long as one man stands against you, you’ll never be able to claim victory.”
Captain America never backs down from a fight and in The Infinity Gauntlet comic book mini-series, he delivers one of his most inspirational quotes. Facing Thanos, who has already snapped half the population of the universe, he says “As long as one man stands against you, you’ll never be able to claim victory.”
Captain America is badly outmatched in this fight and ultimately loses his life against Thanos, who is one of the most powerful cosmic beings in the Marvel Universe when armed with the Gauntlet. That doesn’t stop Captain America from challenging him though.
When He Won’t Quit The People
“I represent the American Dream.”
Sometimes Captain America is inspiring even when he walks away. In Captain America #180, Steve Rogers’ disgust with the American political system leads him to put down the shield. Yet his parting quote reveals that his ideals never waver, in or out of costume.
“I represent the American Dream,” Rogers says, “I represent the American people.” He can’t represent a government or party, especially one that may behave in contrast with its stated values. Even out of the costume, he inspires by holding the line.
When He Won’t Move
“No, you move.”
The epic Civil War crossover event from the early 2000s put Captain America’s values to the test by going against the government-mandated Superhero Registration Act. But he continued to inspire, refusing to move off of his values because of public pressure.
“No, you move,” Captain America said, the cap to a fantastic speech that embodied his core values. Despite pressure from the government, the public, and his friends, he remained committed to what he believed was right and accepted the consequences.
