Captain Carter Should Lead An MCU AForce Movie

Warning: This article contains spoilers for What If…? episode 1.

With Captain Carter’s well-received entrance in What If…?, Peggy Carter is the obvious choice to lead a live-action A-Force movie in the MCU should one happen. Avengers: Endgame gave audiences a cool moment of fan service when Captain Marvel, Wanda, Wasp, Shuri, Pepper, Okoye, Mantis, Gamora, Nebula & Valkyrie assemble for an epic team-up shot in the climactic battle. While the fleeting image was seen as pandering by some, the MCU has since made significant steps forward in representation and diversity both in front and behind the camera. Phase 4 has been steadily setting up the future line-up of Avengers after the Infinity Saga, but the expansion of the MCU and the multiverse has widened the canvas on which to tell stories, and an A-Force movie now seems more like a question of “when” rather than “if.”

Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) debuted in the MCU as a supporting character in Captain America: The First Avenger back in 2011, before sporadically appearing throughout the Infinity Saga in cameo scenes, culminating in the life-affirming dance with Steve Rogers at the close of Avengers: Endgame. A re-imagining of the character appears in the first episode of Disney+ show What If…?. Peggy receives the super-soldier serum rather than Steve, transforming her into superhero Captain Carter, complete with vibranium shield and the Sword of Might.

At the end of the episode, Carter is brought through space and time to the present day, setting up endless possibilities for the character, including a possible return to live-action in Phase 4 and beyond, specifically in an A-Force movie. For casual MCU fans, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel may seem like the obvious choice as leader for an A-Force movie, whereas in the comics it’s She-Hulk (making her MCU debut in 2022 in her own Disney+ show). Peggy Carter, however, has been in the MCU since Phase 1 and has a great deal of goodwill built up among fans. In her guise as the multiverse’s Captain Carter, she has both the physicality and skills necessary to be an inspiring leader to a new team of heroes. The same is true of Atwell, who is more than capable (and long overdue the chance) of stepping up to lead a Marvel tentpole.

This would do justice to the potential of the character, whose importance and value to the MCU (she is one of the MCU’s founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D., after all) has not been reflected in her treatment by Marvel up to now. Her TV show Agent Carter lasted only two short seasons and has since effectively been wiped from canon alongside other non-Disney+ Marvel content. With a cinematic universe with as many characters as the MCU, it’s inevitable that a few characters will be shortchanged in terms of development and screen time, but Atwell and Peggy deserve more.

Marvel seems to be finally realizing the potential of Peggy Carter, positioning her center stage in What If…?’s marketing material. She’s been confirmed to appear in multiple seasons of the Disney+ show, and with the multiverse ready to break wide open in Phase 4, Marvel has an opportunity to give a character that has been present in the MCU for over 10 years the spotlight. Peggy is a hero and role model without a drop of super-soldier serum; imagine what Captain Carter could become given the chance to lead the A-Force.
