Everyone loves a good edge-of-your-seat thriller, but the fact that movies like Captain Phillips and Munich actually happened drives up the intensity.

Every moviegoer loves a good thriller that keeps them on the edge of their seat from start to finish, but the entries in this genre are particularly thrilling when the on-screen events actually took place in real life. Most historical movies are straight dramas seeking Oscar glory, but the occasional historical movie takes a more intense, action-driven approach to its story.
Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips, about a real-life cargo ship captain who was abducted by Somali pirates, is a great example of a tense, heart-racing thriller inspired by true events, but plenty of other cinematic thrill-rides have been adapted from chilling realities.
10 Captain Phillips (2013)
Tom Hanks is Hollywood’s quintessential relatable everyman, which made him the perfect casting choice for Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama, a cargo ship that was commandeered by Somali pirates led by Abduwali Muse.
After the hijacking, Phillips was taken hostage. Bourne director Paul Greengrass brought a visceral intensity to Phillips’ terrifying story and Barkhad Abdi gave a strong supporting performance as Muse.
9 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi (2016)
Michael Bay’s politically charged action thriller 13 Hours dramatized the story of the Annex Security Team, who defended the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya from a barrage of attacks by militants.
Arriving between dreadful Transformers movies, 13 Hours provided more proof that Bay makes better movies when he has less money at his disposal.
8 Deepwater Horizon (2016)
Although its massive budget and limited marketing campaign prevented it from achieving box office success, Deepwater Horizon is a brilliantly realized dramatization of the titular oil spill caused by BP in the Gulf of Mexico. Mark Wahlberg reteamed with Lone Survivor director Peter Berg for this movie, and would later reunite with him again for Patriots Day, another gripping true-to-life thriller.
Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, and Gina Rodriguez all starred as oil workers, while John Malkovich appears as a slimy BP suit representing everything the company did wrong during this ordeal.
7 United 93 (2006)
Another Paul Greengrass movie, United 93 is a real-time account of the September 11th terrorist attacks from the point of view of one of the passenger planes that was hijacked.
The passengers of United Flight 93 managed to foil the terrorists’ plans and ended up crashing the plane near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
6 Argo (2012)
Arguably Ben Affleck’s finest directorial effort to date, 2012’s Argo revolves around the 1979-1981 Iran hostage crisis. Affleck stars as CIA exfiltration specialist Tony Mendez, who managed to rescue six American diplomats being held hostage in Tehran by pretending to be a movie producer scouting locations for a sci-fi epic. Alan Arkin and John Goodman play the Hollywood insiders who make the production look legit.
The movie fictionalized the true events with Hollywood schmaltz, but it’s still a great tense thriller. The finale is breathtaking, cross-cutting between Mendez getting the hostages onto a plane and the Revolutionary Guards catching on to the scam and racing to the airport to stop them.
5 Memories Of Murder (2003)
Bong Joon-ho’s crime thriller Memories of Murder was loosely adapted from the serial murders that took place in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province from 1986 to 1991.
These murders were the first serial killings in Korean history, so they’re pretty significant, and Bong told the story with plenty of his signature dark humor.
4 Monster (2003)
Charlize Theron gave one of the greatest performances in movie history in Monster as Aileen Wuornos, a former sex worker who killed seven of her clients throughout 1989 and 1990 and was eventually executed in Florida in 2002.
Years before Wonder Woman would make her a household name, Patty Jenkins brought a real humanity to Wuornos and her challenging story in Monster.
3 Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
After bringing moviegoers an eye-opening account of the Iraq War in The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal told a more specific political story in their follow-up movie, Zero Dark Thirty.
Released just over a year after Osama bin Laden was assassinated, the controversial Zero Dark Thirty told the story of the decade-long manhunt that led to the killing. Jessica Chastain anchors the movie as a fictional CIA intelligence analyst named Maya.
2 Serpico (1973)
Frank Serpico spent 11 years as a cop working for the NYPD. Disgusted by the corruption in his department, Serpico led the charge against crooked cops as a whistleblower and eventually instigated the Knapp Commission’s groundbreaking investigation.
Serpico recounted his story to Peter Maas, who turned it into a book. Sidney Lumet turned that book into a movie with Al Pacino playing Serpico in one of his all-time most memorable performances.
1 Munich (2005)
One of Steven Spielberg’s darkest movies, Munich takes place in the aftermath of the massacre of the Israeli team at the 1972 Summer Olympics. When the Palestine Liberation Organization was found to be responsible for the massacre, the Israeli government launched a secret mission called Operation Wrath of God to exact revenge.
The movie’s star-studded cast contains such revered actors as Eric Bana, Daniel Craig, and Ciarán Hinds. Despite his usual family-friendly sensibility, Spielberg didn’t hold back in depicting the brutal violence of the Munich massacre and the ensuing retaliation effort.
