A Castlevania spinoff series has been officially ordered by Netflix, which will star Richter Belmont – a distant descendant of Trevor and Sypha – during the French Revolution. The announcement comes in the wake of Castlevania’s fourth and final season, which premiered on the streamer in May. Given the longevity of certain characters in the Castlevania universe, there should be lots of opportunities for familiar faces to pop up alongside the new ones.
Based on the popular video games from Konami, Castlevania has been widely heralded since its season 1 premiere as one of the best game adaptations to date. The series sparked a wave of other game-based series at Netflix, which include upcoming adaptations of franchises like Resident Evil and Assassin’s Creed. Castlevania has drawn widespread praise over the years for its gorgeous animation, stylish action, and phenomenal voice cast. The news that the show was ending after season 4 was therefore understandably disappointing for some fans.
Fortunately, Castlevania won’t be gone from Netflix for long. According to an official announcement from Netflix Geeked, a new spinoff/sequel series has been ordered, which will star a distant great-grandson of Trevor and Sypha named Richter Belmont. Classic game character Maria Renard will also star. According to the announcement, the show will be set during the French Revolution in 1792 France. That’s almost 350 years after the events of the original show, opening up lots of possibilities for new storylines and characters. Check out the official announcement below, which features a funny addendum from the original show’s director.

Fans of the Castlevania video games will immediately recognize the name of Richter Belmont, who is perhaps the third most famous character to bear the family name after Trevor and original game protagonist Simon. Richter starred in the highly-acclaimed 1993 game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, and appeared again in 1997’s Castlevania: Symphony of the Night – a game which is regarded as perhaps the best in the entire series. It seems likely that the new show will adapt the story of both games, possibly over the course of several seasons.
That means that, in addition to all the new characters, the Castlevania spinoff will likely feature the return of several original characters – most notably, Alucard and Dracula. Alucard is the lead protagonist of Symphony of the Night, which means he could become incredibly important later on in the new show. And Dracula is still a threat in Richter’s era, looming over the events of both games. Rondo and Symphony are two of the best games in the entire Castlevania franchise, and it should be fun to see them brought to life with the incredible direction and beautiful style of the Netflix adaptation.
