Child’s Play Creator REALLY Hated The Voodoo Curse

A big part of Chucky’s mythology in the Child’s Play franchise is his use of voodoo, but it turns out creator Don Mancini isn’t a fan of that choice. While it’s well-known that the 2019 Child’s Play remake was made expressly against the wishes of Mancini, it’s possible one aspect he might’ve liked in the new film is that it completely erases the voodoo angle. The new Chucky, voiced by Mark Hamill, is instead created when a disgruntled programmer intentionally corrupts the A.I. powering a high-tech doll.

This corruption twists Chucky’s programming, causing it to see anyone who gets in the way of his and Andy’s bond as a threat in need of termination, including Andy’s family and friends. Instead of wanting to play “hide the soul” with Andy, 2019 Chucky simply takes his mission to be Andy’s friend to the end way too seriously, even when Andy himself would like nothing more than to be rid of Chucky for good.

Unsurprisingly, many dedicated Child’s Play fans weren’t happy with the changes made to Chucky’s origin and backstory, including the decision to dump the voodoo spells and curses at Chucky’s disposal. However, despite voodoo playing such a big role in the original franchise, Mancini has never liked it being included in the plot.

Child’s Play Creator REALLY Hated The Voodoo Curse

While Don Mancini is the creator of the Child’s Play franchise and the Chucky character, and has been a credited writer on every film outside of the remake, it may surprise some fans to know that he actually had nothing to do with the voodoo aspects of the plot. These were added during script rewrites by director Tom Holland, and by that point, Mancini was no longer a part of the creative process. In Mancini’s original concept for Child’s Play, the Chucky doll is sort of an extension of Andy’s psyche after both participated in a “blood brother” ritual. It came to life when Andy was asleep, and wasn’t inhabited by the spirit of a serial killer. That latter ingredient was added in an earlier rewrite by producer David Kirschner.

That being the case, one might wonder why Mancini never downplayed or removed the voodoo elements in future Child’s Play films he wrote the scripts for, or eventually started directing. In interviews, Mancini has said that he kept using the voodoo stuff because lots of fans had come to love it, and because he didn’t want any of the films to feel like they were separate from or contradicted the others. To his credit, every Child’s Play movie has direct ties back to the prior ones, and not one entry has ever been retconned out of existence as has been done in so many other horror franchises. In that spirit, it seems Chucky will forever remain a voodoo practitioner.
