Chris Pratt confirms that James Gunn’s script will be used for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This is despite the fact that the filmmaker was booted out of his Marvel Studios job last year when his old offensive tweets were unearthed.

The firing of Gunn came quickly from Disney, convincing a lot of people that it was a knee-jerk reaction from the company and believing that the director should be reinstated, especially since he’s repeatedly addressed and apologized for his past social media posts. For months, it became a popular topic of discussion online with people having varying opinions on the matter. But despite a fan-backed campaign that is also supported by several people from the industry, including the core cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, it doesn’t seem like the House of Mouse will be backtracking their decision. Despite not helming, Gunn’s fingerprints will still be all over the upcoming threequel with Pratt revealing that they’re working off of the script that their former-director wrote before he was sacked.

Speaking with MTV News while promoting his recent film, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Pratt was asked about the status of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after its production was put on hold (it was supposed to start this year) due to Gunn’s firing. While the actor maintains that the film will eventually happen (something that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also said), he confirmed that they’re using Gunn’s script for the film as well. As it turns out, Pratt has read the script and he has nothing but good things to say about it. Watch his interview below:

For Gunn’s part, the filmmaker seems to have already moved on, scoring a script-writing gig at Warner Bros. for its upcoming new take on DC’s Suicide Squad. As of now, he’s reportedly also being courted to direct The Suicide Squad, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. And while Marvel fans will surely miss him in the MCU, no one can really blame him if he accepts the opportunity presented to him by another studio. Truthfully, Marvel Studios didn’t just lose the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director when they fired Gunn, they also let go of their creative point person who was supposed to man the budding cosmic side of the MCU.

Despite repeated reassurance from people involved that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will eventually happen, it’s unwise to wait too long to get the project into production. As far as what’s known about Gunn’s script, the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame will be the springboard to the heroes’ next adventure. And if there’s going to be a slew of films to come out first that don’t necessarily have a significant link to Thanos’ story, by the time the threequel comes out, it would feel out of place. The problem is, even if Marvel Studios wants to move forward with the project quickly, they might have a hard time looking for someone to helm the flick – especially since most of the rumored top picks don’t want to take over because they feel like it’s supposed to be Gunn’s job.

Accidental movie fan who is perpetually curious, Ana rekindled her love for writing several years back and married it with everything pop culture. The result is a passionate young writer who could ramble (and of course, pen) about films and series multiple hours a day. She has a soft spot for The Lion King, old songs, and home design; is currently obsessed with old sitcoms (The Golden Girls!); and won’t dare watch any horror films although she’s (ironically) dying to see one. Though a bit late to the party and was an actual Force non-believer, she now finds the Star Wars franchise quite fascinating (fun fact: it was a crazy Jar Jar Binks/Sith theory that drew her in).
