Chucky Episode 5 Answers A Cult of Chucky Nica Cliffhanger

Warning: SPOILERS for Chucky season 1, episode 5.

Chucky episode 5, “Little Little Lies” saw Nica Pierce finally return to the franchise, resolving a lingering cliffhanger question from Cult of Chucky at the same time. Following in the footsteps of her father, Brad Dourif—who voices the show’s titular monster—Fiona Dourif joined the franchise in 2013’s Curse of Chucky. Emerging as the movie’s final girl, Nica returned in the direct 2017 Child’s Play sequel, once again making it out (somewhat) alive. It was subsequently confirmed that Dourif’s Nica would be among Chucky 2021’s cast of characters during its critically acclaimed 8-episode run.

When last seen, Nica was confined to a mental institution following the traumatic events of Curse of Chucky. Trapped under the care of the villainous Doctor Foley (Michael Therriault), Nica came to believe that she was indeed a delusional murderer. Nica was able to remember the truth when Chucky returned to terrorize her once more. Rather than simply trying to kill her, though, Chucky instead murdered everyone else on her behalf, including the vile doctor, before successfully taking over her body. Nica-Chucky ultimately left with Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), adding to the Cult of Chucky movie’s cliffhanger ending that directly sets up the new series.

Both Fiona Dourif and Nica returned in Chucky episode 5. Still possessed by Chucky, Nica’s body served as an unwilling participant in his and Tiffany’s psychotic games. After bloodying his knife, however, Chucky lost control and Nica was able to return to the metaphorical driver’s seat, albeit temporarily. The killer doll of course regained control of his host in the end, but this story answered a lingering Cult of Chucky question. Born paraplegic, Nica spent her entire life in a wheelchair. She was able to walk when Chucky took over her body, leading fans to wonder whether that healing would remain a permanent fixture. Chucky episode 5 answers this question, confirming that when Nica reverts to her previous state of immobility when back in control of her body.

On a technical level, the move was a smart one, allowing Fiona Dourif and the Chucky TV show to make the distinction between Nica and Chucky more apparent. As a result, it allowed Fiona Dourif to take her already impressive performance to new heights as she shifted back and forth between the two. The sheer difference in physicality between when she’s Nica compared to when she’s Chucky was an almost tour-de-force level dual performance. Equally, the internal war being waged between Nica and Chucky offered a fresh approach to the traditional conflict between the redheaded monster and his victims. It served as a poignant thematic reflection of the external battle between Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur) and his friends versus the potentially multiple killer dolls teased in Chucky episode 4.

The choice also added an even deeper level of tragedy to Nica’s life. Having already experienced imaginable levels of suffering—including the loss of her entire family—Nica won’t have that silver lining should she succeed at reclaiming her body once and for all. It also added dramatically to the tension that has permeated throughout the Chucky TV show. Even when Nica has battled back to the surface, there’s no easy way for her to escape Tiffany, much less the other villains lurking within Hackensack, New Jersey. That goes for both Chucky the doll and potentially Junior Wheeler (Teo Briones), should the theory that Junior will become Chucky’s new protege actually come to pass. Still, whatever the future holds, Jake and the others have at least one more ally waiting in the wings, and Chucky fans were no doubt glad to officially have Fiona Dourif and Nica back.
