Chucky TV Show Star Has Never Watched The Child’s Play Movies

Chucky star Zackary Arthur reveals that he’s never seen the Child’s Play movies before. Arthur plays Jake Wheeler in Chucky, a Syfy and USA Network television series that builds on the narrative established in the popular horror franchise. It begins as Jake, a bullied 14 year-old, purchases a vintage Chucky doll from a yard sale. It doesn’t take long for the doll, which is possessed by the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray, to wreak havoc on Jake’s life. The show also stars Björgvin Arnarson, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Teo Briones, Devon Sawa, and Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky.

Chucky delves into the mythology of its titular character, showing more of how Ray came to be known as such a vicious murderer. But it also takes time to examine the inner-life of Jake, a gay teen that’s neglected at home and mocked at home. The approach may well prove successful, as the Child’s Play adaptation has had one of the most-watched premieres of 2021. In its first week, more than 4 million viewers watched the debut of Chucky. Many of those, undoubtedly, were fans of the versatile film franchise which was often as cheeky as it was gory.

In an interview with Collider, when asked about his familiarity with Chucky, Arthur says that he never got to watch the Child’s Play movies growing up. Although the actor says that he was of course aware of Chucky as a character, he notes that he wasn’t allowed to watch R-rated movies. Arthur concludes that, nonetheless, it makes the experience of working on Chucky that much more surreal. Read his quote below.

“I don’t think there’s a single person you could ask on the street, who doesn’t know who Chucky is. Growing up, my parents didn’t want me watching rated R movies, or anything like that, so I never really got to watch it. I thought that the kids who watched Chucky movies were the cool kids, so it just makes it so much more surreal to be on the show now.”

Arthur also touches on what makes television such an interesting avenue for a Child’s Play continuation. While the show doesn’t skimp on the kills, it’s equally interested in the everyday problems that the characters face. Don Mancini, who created the film franchise, also created the series and writes several of its episodes. He’s noted that Chucky is partly inspired by his own life and, in particular, that the character of Jake drew from his own experiences.

So far in the show, the titular serial killer has attempted to leverage Jake’s troubled life in order to turn him to the dark side. And, in flashbacks, viewers learn more about the fact that Charles had a mentor who helped teach him how to become a skilled murderer. There’s a push-and-pull to the plot, and a certain patience to it, that allows Chucky to stand on its own even as it honors the Child’s Play movies. And, in the process, it allows Arthur to put his own stamp on the franchise.
