Cinderella (2021) The 10 Best Characters

The new Amazon Prime film, Cinderella manages to tell an iconic tale but does so in an intriguing way that modernizes many aspects. That includes making changes to some of the characters. While most aspects of these characters are similar to the source material, there are still enough alterations to make this film stand out.

Some villainous characters are a bit nicer than originally intended, while others play a more prominent part. That makes it interesting to look at who are the highlights of this newest version of the tale, especially when compared to every other version that came before it.

10 Narissa & Malvolia

Cinderella (2021) The 10 Best Characters

Although they are two people, Narissa (Charlotte Spencer) and Malvolia (Maddie Baillio) basically go hand-in-hand. They’re always together as Cinderella’s unlikable stepsisters in every version of the story. Despite that, they do have a handful of differences that actually help make them stand out a bit.

Narissa comes across as the slightly more clueless one but she’s also somewhat hopeless, while Malvolia is impulsive and prone to go after what she wants. They get some funny moments, like when they basically gave up at the sight of Cinderella in her dress. It helps that they aren’t nearly as wicked as the source material.

9 James, John, & Romesh

Similar to the stepsisters, these three basically share the screen in every scene. James (James Corden), John (James Acaster), and Romesh (Romesh Ranganathan) are the mice who befriend Cinderella, just like in the original story. While they’re mice, they don’t get a ton of time unlike the rodents did in the Disney classic iteration.

However, when they become humans after the spell, they are given more lines to be comedic. That included a pretty ridiculous scene where they talk about how they go to the bathroom as people. They don’t do much else and none stand out from the rest but their loyalty and friendship are welcome.

8 Fab G

Cinderella (2021) The 10 Best Characters

One of the most obvious changes to the story was that the legendary fairy godmother character was now going to be played by a male. That would be Fab G (Billy Porter), who played the expected position of showing up to help Cinderella and use magical powers to make her wishes come true.

Thankfully, Porter brings a lot of energy to the role, from his flair for the dramatic to his musical performance of “Shining Star.” Fab G helps Cinderella before anyone else really does and the fact that he does so with glee makes him feel somewhat special, especially compared to other characters.

7 Queen Tatiana

Cinderella (2021) The 10 Best Characters

Unlike a lot of the other key characters in the movie, Queen Tatiana (Beverley Knight) doesn’t appear all that much. In fact, she doesn’t even show up until the actual ball but she’s incredibly pivotal to the story because she is the one who gives Cinderella the opportunity of a lifetime.

Tatiana immediately sees that Cinderella is someone special and though she’s at the ball for a good time, she is ready for business. Also, Tatiana is clearly a tough woman as evidenced by her line about how she took the crown from the original “your highness.” In only a couple of scenes, Tatiana shines brightly.

6 Princess Gwen

Cinderella (2021) The 10 Best Characters

Similar to her mother Beatrice, Princess Gwen (Tallulah Greive) is a victim of not appearing as much as she should. Her role for most of the movie is to stand in the background and have good ideas that ultimately go unnoticed by those around her, especially her father.

However, it turns out that her brother was listening the entire time since he realized she was far better suited to run the kingdom than he was. King Rowan eventually agrees as well, and Gwen is given the chance to be in charge. She’s a smart woman but the movie doesn’t allow her to be an active character as she has to stand by until she’s finally given an opening.

5 Queen Beatrice

Cinderella (2021) The 10 Best Characters

A lot of the characters in this version of the story are more modern in their thought processes. That includes Queen Beatrice (Minnie Driver), the wife of the king who would enjoy life more if she was appreciated more by her husband, which she calls him out on by the end of the film.

At the start of the movie, the only thing clear about Beatrice is that she loves her son and has a great relationship with him. She supports his choices and desires in a way his father doesn’t. As noted, her words to the king are ultimately what leads him to change for the better, making her an important and great character who doesn’t quite get enough screen time.

4 Vivian

Cinderella (2021) The 10 Best Characters

In almost every iteration of Cinderella, the stepmother of the titular character is a villain who is simply wicked. Things are a bit different in this take, with Vivian (Idina Menzel) not being flat out evil. The only time she feels truly terrible is when she destroys Cinderella’s dress.

In fact, Vivian doesn’t even get mad when she finds Cinderella’s glass slipper. Instead, she wants her to have a happy life with the prince and even explains her own dreams when she was younger. That allows Vivian to be more layered than past versions of the character, working as both something of an antagonist and a mentor.

3 King Rowan

Cinderella (2021) The 10 Best Characters

Sometimes, the best characters are the ones who display the most growth throughout the story and for 2021’s Cinderella, that is King Rowan (Pierce Brosnan). In this tale, Rowan acts as the main villain and not Cinderella’s family members, as Rowan gets in his son’s way at every turn.

He also doesn’t listen to his wife or daughter but by the time the film wraps up, he’s turned over a new leaf. He gives his daughter a true chance, lets his son do what he wants, and shows his appreciation for his wife. Plus, when Rowan is the bad guy, Brosnan seems to be having a blast and has some of the best scenes.

2 Prince Robert

Cinderella (2021) The 10 Best Characters

Another modernization of a character came with Prince Robert (Nicholas Galitzine). Sure, he’s out there looking for love and not simply trying to marry for power but the difference here is that he takes what Cinderella truly wants into consideration. At first, he offers her marriage but says that means she has to give up her dream.

Over time, Robert comes to understand that’s not the right thing to do. He decides not to have the kingdom he doesn’t care about and wants to be with Cinderella in a way that lets her have her dreams. Also, it’s worth noting that unlike other iterations of the character, Robert meets Cinderella before she’s all glammed up for the ball. He falls for the girl who talks backs to his dad and is trying to run a business, rather than just for her beauty.

1 Cinderella

As is often the case, the titular character is the one who is the best. Cinderella (Camila Cabello) is a character basically tailor-made for audiences to root for. She’s a sweet girl who is dealt a bad hand and is mistreated by almost everyone around her.

In this case, she’s also looked down upon because she dares to want more than to be a typical woman of the era. Cinderella wants to run a dress shop and isn’t interested in things like fame or fortune. Even when the kingdom is presented to her, she declines so she can do her own thing as an independent woman, which is a welcome change.
