Civil Wars Controversial Fallen Hero Returns for Avengers Forever

Marvel’s Avengers Forever promises to be a multiverse-spanning epic, as a team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes combine to face off against the most powerful Masters of Evil team ever, including a character who famously – and controversially – died in the Civil War comics event.

Coming this December, Jason Aaron and Aaron Kuder’s Avengers Forever will see an alternate version of Tony Stark – the Invincible Ant-Man of his home reality – assemble a team to combat the villains introduced in Free Comic Book Day 2021: Avengers/Hulk #1. There are plenty of familiar faces in the crowd – from Exiles’ Captain Peggy Carter to what seems to be one of the Iron Avengers of Earth X – but one hero who’s likely to be particularly welcome is Dr. Bill Foster, aka Goliath.

Goliath – formerly Black Goliath – was killed in Civil War #4 (from Mark Millar and Steve McNiven) by a cyborg clone of Thor. A lesser known hero, Bill’s inclusion in the blockbuster event as one of Captain America’s small circle of Secret Avengers was a surprising detail, though it eventually became apparent he’d been elevated in importance so his eventual death would carry more weight. Controversy followed, as some fans argued that Marvel’s modern stories had ignored one of the company’s first black heroes until it became convenient to kill him off, and others pointed to the language around the killing (Pro-Registration campaigner Miriam Sharpe compares it favorably to a police shooting) as evidence that the scene was part of the event’s larger political statement.

Perhaps because of this controversy, Goliath hasn’t benefited from the usual resurrection cycle of superheroes. Instead, his codename was taken on by his embittered nephew Thomas Foster, who first lashed out at the Avengers as a pseudo-villain and later became a solo hero in order to honor his uncle’s legacy. With Goliath’s relative modern obscurity before Civil War and a compelling new hero having taken up the name, it looked unlikely that fans would see Bill Foster again, but Avengers Forever seems to star the hero in his familiar white and blue costume, seeing at least some version of the original Goliath return to Marvel canon, as revealed in Aaron Kuder’s cover for the event, shared by Marvel.

It’s likely this is the Bill Foster of another reality – and there’s an outside chance that the character could be an alternate version of Tom in a retro costume – but even then it’s good news for fans that Marvel is revisiting Goliath as an Avenger. From the first Captain Marvel to the original Vision, Marvel often revisits its legacy heroes through magic, time travel, alternate realities, and non-canon stories, and Avengers Forever seems to be particularly focused on honoring Avengers history, with less popular inclusions like Erik Killraven, Doctor Druid, and Thunderstrike. That Goliath appears in the line-up shows that Marvel doesn’t consider him a shelved character despite the rare seemingly permanent death he suffered in Civil War.

How much of Goliath will be seen on such a huge roster remains to be revealed, but his inclusion is one of the best reasons to think that Avengers Forever is going all-in on a celebration of Avengers past, present and future. Though controversially killed off in Civil War, Goliath still has adventures ahead of him in Marvel comics, even if the multiverse itself has to be put at risk in Avengers Forever to make that possible.
