The Gauls, led by their leader Ambiorix, enter the world stage in Civilization 6. They were a Celtic culture that lived in Western Europe, around France and Belgium, that clashed with the Roman Empire.
In Civ 6, the Gallic people benefit heavily from building mines, thanks to their Hallstatt Culture ability; not only do they yield culture, but they grab adjacent unowned tiles and make districts placed next to them stronger. With Ambiorix in charge, their military becomes even stronger when they fight side by side and he also improves their culture the more troops are trained. This guide will examine Gaul’s bonuses and how players can lead them to victory.
Gaul’s Early Game in Civilization 6
City settling is incredibly important for the Gauls, as their Hallstatt Culture grants bonuses to mines. Be sure to settle cities next to hills and only in areas with hills, as their entire civilization revolves around utilizing them. One weakness the Gauls have is that their districts cannot be built next to city centers, so plan out carefully where each one will go to best take advantage of their adjacency bonuses to mines. With that said, avoid coastlines, as there won’t be any mines there to take advantage of; Gaul functions best as an inland civ.
Their build order for the early game is simple but effective. Train a builder as soon as possible, so mines can be set up quicker. Placing down mines once the Mining technology is researched will also add any unowned tiles next to it, known as a Culture Bomb. Use this to claim territory in the early game for districts, as these are the tiles they can be built on. Then, train as many of their unique warrior, the Gaesatae, as possible. Ambiorix’s ability, King of the Eburones, provides a boost of culture equivalent to a fraction of a military unit’s production cost (20%) once complete. This lets them soar through the culture tree in the early game and can let them access powerful policy cards and governments earlier than other civilizations. There are 2 civics, in particular, they should prioritize:
- Craftsmanship. This unlocks the military policy Agoge, which increases the production of Ancient era melee units, like the Gaesatae, by 50%. This lets them be trained considerably faster, which means Gaul will research civics at a much quicker rate.
- Early Empire. Researching this civic unlocks the Colonization policy, speeding up settler production by 50%. At this point, enough area should be explored by all the Gaesatae that have been trained, so many ideal locations for mining cities can be founded.
Founding a religion is not the best use of time for Gaul, as the turns spent researching Astrology for the Holy Site and building it can be spent building more military units. However, obtaining a pantheon, specifically the God of the Forge Pantheon, is highly worth it. Once chosen, Ancient era units are trained 25% faster, allowing the Gallic people to train even more soldiers and discover even more civics!
Now that the streets of the capital are crowded with troops, it’s time to put them to use. Overwhelming barbarians with them mean they aren’t a threat, and neighboring civilizations will struggle to resist the might of their numbers. These numbers synergize well with the other part of Ambiorix’s ability, which grants military units +2 combat strength for every adjacent Gallic unit. Be wary about city states though, because they start the game with defensive walls around their cities. It will be very tough to take them without a battering ram, which needs to be researched and built. They can come later, but focus efforts on more vulnerable enemies first.
Gaul’s Unique Units in Civilization 6
As stated, the Gaesatae are the Gauls’ special warrior replacement, which means they start the game with one. What makes them impressive is that they gain +10 combat strength against units from advanced eras, allowing them to be relevant much longer. This also means they won’t need to be upgraded with gold for a long time, which is fortunate because the player’s economy may not be very high due to the maintenance cost of having such a large army. In addition, this unit gains +5 combat strength when attacking districts, letting them take cities more easily. Add Ambiorix’s bonus power from nearby allies, and the Gallic Gaesataes will put in serious work.
Next is their unique Industrial Zone, the Oppidum. These were little settlements dotted around Europe that the Gauls built, which were walled urban areas where both economic and military coincided safely. In Civ 6, they function like an encampment and can launch ranged attacks. This is fantastic, as proper placement allows them to safely guard nearby cities. Just like regular Industrial Zones, they gain more production when built next to mines and strategic resources, but even more than before! With them, they’ll not only protect cities but help them build even faster! To sweeten the deal, players can build them earlier because they’re unlocked with the Iron Working technology instead of Apprenticeship; building an Oppidum even unlocks that technology, saving the player extra turns!
Winning with Gaul in Civilization 6
Even with their combat prowess, the Gauls have a few different options for victory.
- Domination. Gaul’s ability to benefit from training endless troops is reason enough to pursue this path, but they may find difficulty striking on other continents due to sea travel. If they cannot pull off a naval invasion, it’s best to try for other victories instead.
- Science. Science victories require a lot of production to build Spaceports and complete the space projects, and this civilization can do so easily with their amazing mines and Oppidums.
- Culture. Gaining culture from training units will let them progress through the civic tree faster so they can gain access to districts and wonders needed for a Culture Victory. Churning out endless units alone isn’t enough, as Tourism is needed to secure this victory type. Use Gaul’s amazing production to build Tourism boosting wonders easier and use mines to make Theatre Squares yield more culture!
There are 2 wonders that Gaul players should try to build that take advantage of their boons.
- Statue of Zeus. Unlocked with the Military Training civic, this wonder comes with the Gaul pack. Once built, it instantly creates 3 archers, 3 spearmen, and a Battering Ram. Because King of The Uborones boosts culture every time a military unit is trained, this wonder will provide a significant surge once completed.
- Ruhr Valley. Built next to Industrial Zones, which the Gauls will have no shortage of, this wonder gives +1 production to every mine and quarry in its city. Find the Gallic city with the largest number of mines to make the most out of Ruhr Valley. It’s unlocked with Industrialization.
