The Republic’s Clone Troopers were as much the protagonists of Star Wars: The Clone Wars as their Jedi leaders, and most clones replaced their numbers with nicknames, based on their personalities and experiences. In both the current Disney Star Wars canon and the Legends timeline (formerly called the Expanded Universe), the Clone Wars non-movie material bridged the gap between Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, depicting the three-year war that helped turn the Galactic Republic into the autocratic Galactic Empire.
All Clone Troopers are grown from the template of Jango Fett, a Mandalorian and the most skilled bounty hunter in the galaxy (before his death on Geonosis). Thanks to their Kaminoan creators, the Clone Troopers became an elite fighting force, able to assist the Jedi Knights against the overwhelming numbers of the Separatist Droid Army. The Kaminoans intended the Clone Troopers to be completely obedient soldiers with no identity outside of their service to the Republic, but the clones constantly defied this, demonstrating free will. Unfortunately, they still played their true role when the time came. The true purpose of the clones was to gain the trust of the Jedi and murder them when Order 66 was given.
Before Order 66 overrode their free will, the clones often expressed unique personalities. Many clones took on a name to replace their numerical designation, and some took this a step further, having many clones personalize their appearance via tattoos, hairstyles, and sometimes their armor. Each clone’s name has a meaning, referencing the clone’s personality, quirks, or a defining experience in their past. There are countless named clones in Canon and Legends, but the most notable clones have fascinating stories behind their nicknames, which in some cases could be extrapolated.
Alpha
In the Legends universe, Alpha-class ARC Troopers were the most elite clones in the Republic, having been trained by Jango Fett himself and equipped with deadly specialized gear. They were nearly unaltered, aside from growth acceleration, and most disobeyed Order 66 at the end of the war. Alpha-17 was the primary clone character in the Star Wars: Republic comic series and his nickname is a shorter version of his full name.
Able
The Legends Clone Trooper Able-1707 never became brainwashed by Order 66 because he’d been stranded on Lubang Minor for most of the Clone Wars. During the Galactic Civil War, he encountered Luke Skywalker, who filled him in on the coup that replaced the Republic with the Empire, and that there’s a Rebellion to restore democracy. Since the clone still retained his free will, he unsurprisingly joined the Rebellion, becoming one of their most elite operatives. Like Alpha, his nickname simply removes the numbers from his full name.
Delta Squad
These four Clone Commandos were the protagonists of the 2005 video game Star Wars: Republic Commando. Each commando’s name reflects their respective role within the squad. Their leader, a masterful tactician, is unsurprisingly named “Boss.” The squad’s second-in-command had a penchant for technology, earning him the name “Fixer.” Their demolition expert notably scorched off his eyebrows during a training session, and thus became “Scorch.” The sniper of the squad, “Sev” got his name from his numerical designation (RC-1207), but his tendency to sever the limbs of hostiles with his sniper blaster may have also contributed to this.
Commander Cody
A close friend of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s, the story of how Commander Cody got his name has not been revealed in-universe. Behind the scenes, his name references a science-fiction serial character named “Commando Cody,” an homage taken further by the clone’s frequent use of jetpacks. Commander Cody is also a strict adherent to Republic procedure, so his name could potentially reference the word “code” in-universe.
Rex
Easily the most popular and prominent Clone Trooper in the Canon continuity, Captain Rex was one of several protagonists in The Clone Wars. Like Cody, Rex’s nickname has no official in-universe origin, but a potential one could be extrapolated. Rex is an extremely skilled combatant (even by clone standards). When turned loose on the Separatists, he “wrecks” them, possibly earning him the name “Rex.”
Domino Squad
The ill-fated clones of Domino Squad all got their nicknames before completing their training on Kamino. “Droidbait” had an uncanny tendency for being targeted the most by training droids (something he used to his advantage at least once). “Cutup” doled out quips as often as he did blaster fire. “Fives’” numeric designation was CT-5555. “Echo” often repeated his superiors’ orders, much to the annoyance of his squadmates. “Heavy” was both the squad’s heavy gunner and the clone who tried to carry the “weight” of his squad by himself.
The Bad Batch
These mutated clone commandos are the protagonists of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, and like Delta Squad, their names are based on their specialties. Their leader has superhuman senses, and is naturally called “Hunter.” “Wrecker” fittingly prefers to use the direct approach in combat, using his super strength to great effect. The squad’s hacker has enhanced intelligence, and his love of technology earned him the name “Tech.” The Bad Batch’s sniper, who possesses enhanced eyesight, is appropriately named “Crosshair.” Even the Bad Batch’s designation, Clone Force 99, was inspired by a mutated clone named 99.
Wolffe
Commander Wolffe is Plo Koon’s second in command of the 104th Legion. The Legion is typically referred to as the “Wolfpack,” making Wolffe’s name fitting. Like his namesake, Wolffe is protective of his men, even for a Clone Commander, as seen throughout The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. He’s also a fearless combatant, having fought Asajj Ventress and survived (at the cost of an eye).
Gregor
Gregor was a Clone Commando who suffered amnesia for a time, becoming a dishwasher on Abafar before eventually rejoining the fight against the Separatists. Gregor, along with Wolffe and Rex, was one of the few clones to have removed his control chip and regained his free will. The name “Gregor” symbolizes vigilance, a fitting description for the commando once he regained his memories and free will.
Gree
The brainy Clone Commander of the 41st Elite Corps was featured in both Star Wars canon and Legends. Gree was particularly fascinated by the various alien species of the galaxy, and he took on the name of an obscure sentient cephalopod, partially as a conversation starter for beings with a similar fascination. Fittingly, Gree and his men specialized in seeking out and allying themselves with the many alien species of the galaxy, allowing Gree to pursue his passion and gain a reputation as a friendly and highly effective leader.
Slick
A rarity among Clone Troopers, Slick betrayed the Republic and worked as a double agent for the Separatist dark side-user Asajj Ventress. Slick believed his actions served the potential freedom for his brethren, but they resulted in several clones being injured or killed. How Slick got his name is unknown, but his clever tactics when evading Rex and Cody prove it to be fitting.
Cut Lawquane
Another uncommon Clone Trooper, Cut Lawquane deserted the Republic after a Separatist ambush left him presumed dead. Cut lived a normal life on Saleucami, becoming a husband, father, and farmer. The surname Lawquane might be his wife’s, and there’s no official explanation for the nickname “Cut.” By deserting the Clone Army, Cut separates from his brothers, cutting himself off from a life of violence and leading to appearances beyond Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
