Clooney & Pitts New Movie Can Be Oceans 14s Perfect Replacement

George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s new movie has the potential to be the perfect replacement for the increasing unlikely Ocean’s 14. Ocean’s 11 was a big deal when it arrived in 2001, with Clooney and Pitt leading a star-studded cast made up of Hollywood heartthrobs, established character actors, and future Oscar winners. It was a film that defined “cool”, and was a critical and commercial success, spawning the often-derided Ocean’s 12 in 2004, and the better received Ocean’s 13 in 2007. An all-female spin-off, Ocean’s 8, was released in 2018.

As reported (via The Hollywood Reporter), Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts will write, direct and produce a new thriller starring Clooney and Pitt (who will also produce). The movie package has started a bidding war among studios all eager to sign up the trio for the project. Full details on the movie have not been released, however, it apparently centers around “two lone-wolf fixers assigned to the same job”, with presumably Pitt and Clooney in these roles.

Its been 14 years since the last Ocean’s film in the primary series, and with team members Bernie Mac and Carl Reiner passing away since the third film there has been little enthusiasm among the remaining cast to “get the band back together”. Ocean’s series director Steven Soderbergh has apparently been thinking about how a new Ocean’s movie could work, though the chances of Ocean’s 14 actually happening grow slimmer with each passing year. Notwithstanding this, the news of Clooney and Pitt teaming up again in front of the camera may offer fans of the series the next best thing to another installment. With them both playing fixers, likely on the wrong side of the law, the stage is set for some devious one-upmanships and misdirection that the Ocean’s series is famous for. Clooney and Pitt are big screen presences, and with the brief plot outline seeming to allude to them either having to work together or being pitted against one another, either outcome offers plenty of potential for an entertaining film.

Jon Watts is a director in demand, currently finishing the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, and also attached to direct the reboot of Fantastic Four, closing out Phase 4 of the MCU. His new film will apparently be a thriller, a genre he has experience with (Cop Car). However, the concept of lone-wolf fixers butting heads also has the potential to include plenty of comedic elements in the vein of an Ocean’s adventure. The Ocean’s films are at their best when they’re having fun, and whatever form the film ends up taking, Watt’s Spider-Man movies have proved that he is more than capable of delivering a fun time to audiences.

In the 20 years since Ocean’s 11’s release, both George Clooney and Brad Pitt have picked movies carefully, and have both gone from strength to strength, cementing their status as two of the greatest stars of their generation. Whatever characters they play, both are effortlessly charming, whilst having it within their range to be dangerous and ruthless when needed. If they’ve decided to team up with Jon Watts, the result could offer something far better than Ocean’s 14 ever could.
