Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald and Hayden Schlossberg explained how Season 4’s biggest celebrity cameo came to be.

When Grammy-winner Carrie Underwood tweeted in August 2020, “Just started watching #cobrakai on Netflix. Ummmm…it’s kinda awesome,” the Cobra Kai showrunners quickly responded by pitching a future cameo to the country singer. As Schlossberg jokingly told EW, “Be careful what you tweet about Cobra Kai if you’re a celebrity, because we immediately log it and think about the possibilities.” Underwood loved the guest appearance idea and made her singing Cobra Kai debut in Episode 9.

Throughout Season 4, viewers watched Cobra Kai’s rival dojos prepare for the ultimate showdown at the All Valley Tournament. However, what fans didn’t expect midway during the competition’s karate drama was Underwood singing the 1980s rock song “The Moment of Truth.” Schlossberg further explained, “We knew that we wanted this year’s All Valley to be, like, the biggest All Valley ever, and we joked about the idea of there being that kind of Super Bowl halftime performer.” Plus, since Underwood sings NBC’s Sunday Night Football theme song, Schlossberg said, “It made a lot of sense. We didn’t know if it was going to come together, but she really loved the show and it was a match made in heaven.”

After the episode aired, Underwood gushed about her fandom for Cobra Kai and the Karate Kid franchise, saying, “I can’t believe I actually get to be a small part of the legacy that is The Karate Kid. Once I discovered Cobra Kai a few years ago, it became on of my favorite shows! I had so much fun being on the set and singing such a classic song. I cannot wait to watch every new episode!”

Although the Karate Kid soundtrack featured “The Moment of Truth,” some fans wondered why Underwood didn’t perform the original film’s more popular song, “You’re the Best,” by Joe Esposito. The reasoning for the song selection stems from Cobra Kai’s goal to never copycat The Karate Kid’s 1984 tournament sequence. As Schlossberg explained, they instead chose “The Moment of Truth” because “It’s a little bit less known, and yet it still has that same 1980s sports-rock anthem vibe. So to have her sing that, it has that same vibe to the tournament without doing the exact same thing.”

Another Cobra Kai celebrity fan, Andrew Garfield, recently shared his love of the series. Since then, Hurwitz, Heald and Schlossberg have stated that they’re considering a possible cameo for Garfield in an upcoming season.

Season 4 of Cobra Kai is now on Netflix.
