Stars of Cobra Kai William Zabka and Ralph Macchio react to the show’s season 5 renewal ahead of season 4. Cobra Kai takes place decades after the events of the original The Karate Kid films. Following what may or may not have been the illegal crane kick that derailed his life, the series follows the down-and-out Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) and his path to redemption after reopening the Cobra Kai dojo. This, of course, prompted the now-successful Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) to open a rival duo modeled after the teaching of Mr. Miyagi. In addition to Zabka and Macchio, the series stars Martin Kove, Mary Mouser, Tanner Buchanan, Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, and Peyton List.

Cobra Kai premiered in 2018 on YouTube Red, where the show was produced through season 3. While the show had good word of mouth at that point, it has become a cultural phenomenon since moving to Netflix—with season 3 debuting on the platform and becoming the streamer’s most-watched series. Season 3 also garnered four Emmy nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Stunt Performance, Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour), Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour), and Outstanding Stunt Performance. The show’s fourth season won’t even debut until December and Netflix has already announced that Cobra Kai season 5 will get underway this fall in Atlanta.

Fans are surely excited by the prospect of another season after season 4, and the show’s stars seem to be as well. Zabka and Macchio recently reacted to the renewal news on social media, both sharing the same clip as Cobra Kai’s official Twitter account. “Thank you, fans!!” wrote Macchio. “More story coming to you! @CobraKaiSeries S5 starts filming soon!” Zabka echoed Macchio’s sentiment. Given the show’s streaming numbers in the billions, it’s no surprise it’s already been renewed. However, no one could’ve predicted the success of Cobra Kai four years ago, not even showrunners creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, who have plenty of stories to tell including potential spinoffs. By embracing its roots, pulling threads and characters from previous films, and hilariously critiquing nostalgia (while simultaneously paying homage), Cobra Kai accomplishes an impressive tightrope act that is now being imitated by shows like Peacock’s Saved by the Bell. Season 4 is set to see the return of Thomas Ian Griffith’s Terry Silver, an antagonist of The Karate Kid: Part III.

The end of season 3 saw Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso put aside their difference and finally team up against John Kreese (Kove) and the now-corrupt Cobra Kai. The series began as Johnny’s story but he and Daniel are now dual protagonists, further cementing Cobra’s Kai’s message: everyone is the hero of their story. While Zabka and Macchio still had careers after The Karate Kid, Cobra Kai has once again made them household names. The show’s younger members of the cast are benefiting as well, with Maridueña being cast as the small screen’s first live-action Latino superhero in HBO Max’s Blue Beetle for DC Films. It’s safe to say everyone is excited about and for Cobra Kai.
