In one of the most surprising bits of news surrounding the Emmy Award nominations, Cobra Kai found itself up for Outstanding Comedy Series. Of course, fans know the show deserves it due to the way it blends action, comedy, drama, and gripping character moments. In fact, seeing the characters interact is often the best part of the series.
That’s especially true when it’s two people on screen together who the audience is fully invested in. Sometimes it’s a romance, sometimes it’s a friendship but it can also be a family bond or even a rivalry. Regardless, a few pairings have stood out above the rest.
10 Miguel & Tory
When things went awry for Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña) and his relationship with Sam, he entered into a new romance for season 2. That came in the form of Tory Nichols (Peyton List). The two bonded at Cobra Kai dojo and they were dating after just a few episodes.
Tory opened up to Miguel in ways she hadn’t with anyone else and the actors have palpable chemistry together. Unfortunately, some of Tory’s revenge-fueled tendencies get in the way and she never even visits Miguel when he’s in the hospital, spelling their doom. Still, they were always entertaining to watch together.
9 Carmen & Johnny
Pretty much everyone who watches Cobra Kai just wants to see Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) be happy. It has been a long road to get there but romantically, he may finally have that happiness with Carmen Diaz (Vanessa Rubio). At times, it felt like the show wouldn’t go down this route but that changed in season 2.
Carmen and Johnny grew closer, as she saw the influence that he had on her son. Though they’ve had their ups and downs, they seem like they make sense together given how happy they make one another. Carmen brings out the best in Johnny, especially during their double date in season 2, and Johnny works as a father figure for Miguel.
8 Miguel & Samantha
As noted, the romance between Miguel and Samantha LaRusso (Mary Mouser) has been rocky. They were sweethearts in season 1, coming together and opening up to one another with adorable dates. That didn’t last long as both changed a bit heading into the season finale and they broke up.
Season 2 saw them on opposite sides but they shared the screen more throughout season 3. You can see that both are typically better off when they’re on the same side. Things also seemed to spark again romantically as season 3 neared its end and they’re set to be on the same team when the series returns.
7 Johnny & Robby
Some of the best relationships on the show are the most complex. That’s the case with Johnny Lawrence and his son Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan). Johnny wasn’t there for Robby and it caused him to act out. It crushed Johnny when he found out that Robby took on Daniel as his father figure in season 1.
Despite their differences, Johnny does everything in his power to be there for Robby later. He sticks up for him when Robby brings home a drunk Sam and he tries his hardest not to get him to go down a bad path. Watching Robby side with Kreese and attack his dad in the season 3 finale was heartbreaking.
6 Amanda & Daniel
The steadiest relationship on the show has to be the one between Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Amanda LaRusso (Courtney Henggeler). They’re a married couple who has been together for decades and due to that, they know each other better than they know themselves.
They certainly have issues but they’re typically good about working through them. Their love is evident and whenever they share the screen, it’s going to be entertaining. From romantic scenes to fun dates together to their bickering moments, Daniel and Amanda are an important part of the story and a great couple.
5 Samantha & Tory
In some cases, the most engaging duos are the ones who can’t stand each other. While there are plenty of rivalries on Cobra Kai, it’s hard to top the one between Samantha and Tory. It all began innocently enough, with the two clashing when Samantha accused Tory of stealing from someone. From that point on, it only escalated.
After Tory saw Sam kiss Miguel, it was their issues that sparked the giant school fight, so without their rivalry, Miguel would’ve never ended up in the hospital. In season 3, it got even worse when Sam couldn’t even come out to face Tory out of fear. Seeing the two of them fight is constantly gripping.
4 Daniel & Samantha
Between Johnny’s past and Tory’s sick mother, some of the characters don’t have the best relationships with their parents. However, Daniel and Samantha are great together. He’s the doting father who is always there for his daughter, whether it was after she got hospitalized or when she was scared of Tory.
Although they were a bit distant to start season 1, it was made clear that the two enjoyed doing karate together and it helped them bond. While allegiances switch often when it comes to Miguel or Robby, Samantha is steadfast in how she sticks by her father at every turn and is loyal to Miyagi-Do.
3 Demetri & Hawk
When the show began, Demetri (Gianni DeCenzo) and Eli “Hawk” Moskowitz (Jacob Bertrand) were close friends who welcomed Miguel into their band of misfits. Over time, they both got into karate but took different paths. Eli flipped the script, gets a mohawk, and completely changes his attitude.
Doing so made him turn on Demetri and the two became bitter enemies. It reached a boiling point in season 3 when Hawk broke Demetri’s arm. Throughout their feud, they did show flashes of reconnecting before it finally happened in the finale. Their reunion was a heartfelt moment and should be a highlight of season 4.
2 Johnny & Miguel
The entire show got started thanks to the bond forged between Johnny and Miguel. The former saved the latter from a beatdown and agreed to be his sensei but it has gone further than that. Johnny is a father figure to Miguel, who is always there for him. You can tell that Miguel is the first person Johnny has cared about in a long time.
Watching them win the All-Valley together was a bittersweet moment and though things got rocky in season 2, they mended fences. Miguel was ready to give up on walking again but Johnny pushed him harder than everyone and got him back on his feet like a true mentor.
1 Daniel & Johnny
It’s the rivalry that dates all the way back to the ’80s. The whole story was put into motion when Daniel beat Johnny in the All-Valley and their lives went down drastically different paths. Though they seem to hate each other, there are episodes that show how similar they actually are.
“Different But Same” and “Pulpo” are two of the best episodes of the series and they deal with Johnny and Daniel actually having friendship moments, though those are ultimately ruined soon after. Their partnership in season 3 was also a highlight and them coming together as co-senseis made for an epic ending.
