The original story continues below.

PlayStation 4 users (and they alone) can hop into the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War beta when it opens this weekend, but players on other platforms will have to wait. The beta date was originally leaked in Call of Duty: WWII in early September 2020 via that title’s in-game store. The leaked beta date surfaced soon after fans discovered an alpha version of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on the PlayStation Network, and images of the game’s alpha circulated on Twitter the weekend prior to that discovery.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was revealed during an in-game event in Call of Duty: Warzone, a moment that was led into by a surprisingly elaborate and engaging online and real-life ARG. The game’s multiplayer is taking on the challenge of replacing Battlefield with large-scale battles, as shown in the Black Ops Cold War multiplayer reveal trailer. As the game has been confirmed to launch in 2020, players will also be able to experience a larger community through the implementation of cross-generational and crossplay matchmaking.

A stealth-dropped video posted on the official Call of Duty YouTube channel has confirmed the Black Ops Cold War beta begins this weekend. The first beta will be exclusive to PlayStation 4 users and begins on October 8, 2020 for PS4 players who pre-order the game. All PS4 users can access the game’s beta on October 10, 2020, and other platform users – PC and Xbox One – can participate next weekend. The beta trailer shows flashes of in-game combat, complete with gunfire, lobbing grenades, and traversing various terrains – including diving into a body of water to avoid opponents.

PlayStation has been the glorified home of the Call of Duty franchise since the launch of the current console generation. There was a time when Xbox fans received Call of Duty’s DLC first, but that paradigm shifted with the debut of the current generation. This change has reinforced PlayStation fans’ belief in the brand’s superiority, alongside the plethora of first-party exclusives PlayStation receives. However, Microsoft has spent the last couple of years making up for this shortcoming, and its purchasing of several developers, including its most recent acquisition of Bethesda and Zenimax, could see the pendulum swing the other direction with the next generation or the one after.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s beta being exclusive to PlayStation users in the beginning is unsurprising given the aforementioned paradigm shift. That temporary exclusivity continues to give COD fans who care about beta access an incentive to get the game on PlayStation to get in on the ground floor. As the next generation looms, however – coupled with the increasing demand for cross-gen and cross-play support – these timed exclusives may slowly begin falling by the wayside, especially given Microsoft’s apparent willingness to work with Sony and honor exclusivity deals made prior to the company’s acquisition of Bethesda.
