Community 10 Ways Abed Got Worse & Worse

Eleven years ago, the NBC sitcom Community introduced the world to one Abed Nadir. Born to a Pakistani father and a Polish mother, Abed was a film student at Greendale Community College. Thanks to his extensive knowledge of movies and television, he serves as the audience’s guide to the show’s signature meta-humor and subversive storytelling.

But even with his quirky and unique way of understanding life, Abed tends to cross the line, just to push the Study Group to either do a clichéd bit or a quality documentary. Better consider the things that are anything but cool…cool, cool, cool.

10 He Tends To Be Swayed By Toxic People

Abed might be stoic and emotionless, but he is a willing friend who is compelled to bond over their idiosyncrasies. But a few times, he befriends people with hidden toxic personalities that left him upset. One of these is Robert from “Mixology Certification,” who fails to lure Abed to bed.

Others will say that the study group might have been toxic for Abed to cope, mostly with their mafia tactics in “Contemporary American Poultry”. But they do not compare to superfan Toby Weeks, who is willing to hoard Abed selfishly.

9 He Has Yet To Land A Successful Film Career

In his four years in Greendale, Abed explored any opportunity to hone his film skills and knowledge. In the span of that time, he produced three documentaries, a film about his divorced parents, a TV show foreshadowing about his study group and a self-indulgent passion project about a Messianic Abed. Not the brightest of portfolios.

So, it is not surprising in the fifth season that Abed had a failed film career. That grand scale of production he invested on, it is all put to waste. Well, until the last episode.

8 He Forgets About Rachel

One of the funniest gags about Abed is pairing him up with many love interests that are never mentioned again in the future. He did well with a special agent, a videogame character, and a deaf student. But the closest he ever got to a true romance is with coat check girl Rachel (Brie Larson).

The detractor from that element is that, due to her sporadic appearances, Abed claims to have forgotten about her. In the real world, that will not sit well for any functional relationship.

7 He Falls For His Friends’ Deceptions

Abed’s stoic eagerness to bond with his friends also results in him easily falling for their deceptions. For example, going back to “Contemporary American Poultry”, the study group (sans Jeff) manipulates Abed into continuing their chicken finger-hoarding mafia scheme. Even though he is “doing an homage,” he also unintentionally replicates the group’s pettiness from Goodfellas.

And it seems Abed never learned from looking beyond his friends’ manipulations since in “Laws of Robotics and Party Rights,” Britta tricked Abed into throwing a party under the guise of filming a crowd scene.

6 He Points Out Any Trope He Observes To Irritation

Abed will take no wasted opportunity to point out a particular situation and link it to any movie or TV show or pop song or overrated cliche. Sometimes that becomes a subject of annoyance for the study group, particularly Jeff and Pierce. Jeff recognizes his references but tends to be irritated when Abed compares him and others to fictional characters.

As for Pierce, he simply does not understand Abed (as implied on his will). While his penchant for meta references is charming, it could help if Abed used some restraint.

5 He Is Needy For Everyone’s Help

Abed’s determination to execute a pop culture bit would really require the help of the study group. And if he got in trouble, it would also require the help of the study group to mitigate him. Needless to say, it makes Abed childish and helpless.

Back in season 4’s “Conventions of Space and Time,” when Abed realizes about Toby deceiving him about Troy, Toby locks him in a phone booth prop. And instead of using his Inspector Spacetime knowledge to escape the booth, he braced for Troy to save him.

4 He Interferes On The Privacy Of His Study Group

Abed admirers have to consider the fact that he has become unintentionally creepy when he disrespects the privacy of his study group. This is first evident in “Cooperative Calligraphy” when he correctly deduced the menstrual cycles of Annie, Britta, and Shirley, much to their chagrin.

But Abed’s most heinous misdeed has to go to the other bottle episode “Cooperative Polygraphy” when he revealed that he strategically placed GPS trackers inside every member of the study group and also catfished Annie as a made-up Olympic pole vaulter.

3 He Does Anything To Create The Perfect Film

As mentioned, Abed had produced student films and personal documentaries during his time in Greendale. Being a passionate filmmaker, he is dedicated to capturing the best stories on film, even if this comes at the cost of others’ sanity. The finished products are creatively banal homages to other professional documentaries.

In “Introduction to Film,” he made Jeff mirror his father’s attitude. In “Messianic Myths and Ancient Peoples,” he presented himself as a Messiah, much to Shirley’s aghast. And in “Documentary Filmmaking: Redux,” he unintentionally interfered with Dean Pelton’s commercial shoot.

2 He Indulges In Inflated Fantasies About His Friends

While Abed can distinguish TV and movies from real life, there are certain situations where Abed wanted to remain in his fictional worlds about reality. Even after he dismantled the Dreamatorium (and created a smaller version) after season 3, he would prefer to indulge in inflated fantasies about his friends.

That is evident in “History 101” when Abed, anxious about the group splitting up after graduation, indulges in his fantasy about a sitcom and baby cartoon versions of his study group. And what calmed him is Jeff’s cliched speech.

1 He Is Apathetic To The Consequences of His Actions

Ultimately, the worst trait that severely degraded Abed is apathy. It is challenging enough when one has to deal with a friend that barely shows any emotion; it is another story if that friend barely shows any reaction to the severity of his/her actions, even if his/her friends have to carry that burden.

Abed learned this in “Contemporary Impressionists” when Troy and the gang cooperated to help Abed pay his overlooked dues. But it seems Abed was ignorant of this lesson in “Herstory of Dance” after he went along with Shirley and Annie’s double dates, leaving two upset hearts.
