Community’s hilarious double-act, Troy and Abed, produce many great moments throughout the six seasons of the show. One of their most memorable and longest-running bits is “Troy and Abed in the Morning!” which is a fake talk show that the duo host.

In a typical episode, the two best friends cheerfully speak to a rotating guest and an imaginary audience. Other staples of the show include their signature outfits, Troy in a sports coat and Abed in a stripy sweater, and their personalised coffee mugs. The whole thing is a parody of conventional morning shows.

There are eight episodes of “Troy and Abed in the Morning!” in total, and while none of them are bad, some are certainly funnier than others.

8 Homemade Kettle Corn With Rich

The morning show is so outrageously upbeat that most guests struggle to fit in. Yet, Rich is one of the exceptions as the guy is so naturally cheerful that he matches the hosts over-enthusiasm, even though he’s only talking about kettle corn. That is where the humor comes from in this episode. Especially when Jeff interrupts, as the stark contrast between him and Rich is funny to watch.

Unfortunately, beyond that, this iteration of the show doesn’t provide many laughs.

7 Season Four Promo Video

This one is easily the most forgettable as it doesn’t appear in any episodes of Community. Instead, it was a video designed to tell the audience that the premiere date for the divisive fourth season had been changed.

Somehow though, it still manages to be funny as Troy and Abed explain to the audience that October 19th – the originally scheduled air date – is not a specific date but a state of mind. The rest of the study group adds to the hilarity by pointing out the ridiculousness of what the two hosts are saying.

6 Troy And Abed And Annie In The Morning!

“Troy and Abed and Annie in the Morning!” is a rip-off of the original show that Annie secretly creates. She acts as the host of the new show alongside two teddy bears. But before they can truly get started, a furious Troy and Abed storm in and question what Annie is doing.

It’s a nice bit of variation on one of Community’s best running gags. And the fact that Annie’s name and face have been crudely added to the original coffee mugs is a hilarious little detail.

5 Apartment Decoration With Annie

In real-life, watching everything falling apart is hard, but on TV, it can be hilarious, which is the case here. It starts well with Annie’s tips about how the audience can spruce up their home, which comically consists of using a throw to cover up stains and putting pillows on the floor for extra seats.

However, it all takes a turn when she reveals the “extreme bedroom makeover” that she did for Troy and Abed. The latter’s hatred of change means he starts having a meltdown upon seeing his heavily altered room. A panicked Troy then cuts the episode short by holding up a comedic technical difficulties sign in front of the camera while humming a catchy tune.

4 Darkest Timeline

In the darkest timeline, Evil Troy and Evil Abed host their own version of the morning show. After teasing a segment with Greendale’s supreme leader Chang, they receive an update from timeline five’s Troy and Britta. The two are a couple in that world with a kid called Chewbacca, which Britta comically thinks is an African name.

Other funny moments include them cutting to the studio audience that consists of a passed out Shirley, and Evil Jeff disliking the show as much as his prime timeline counterpart. Without this scene, season four’s finale might’ve been the show’s worst.

3 Starburns And Pet Turtle

Community’s beloved recurring character Star-Burns (aka Alex) and his pet turtle, are the main guests for this episode. Or so it seems, but Star-Burns quickly points out that he doesn’t know what’s going on as Troy and Abed just handed him the reptile and put him on the show without explaining anything.

Alex’s confusion plus Troy and Abed ignoring him already make it a brilliant episode. Yet, the funniest part is the weather update at the end, where Gareth stands in front of a board with a picture of a sun on it and says, “it’s still sunny!”

2 Nights

One of the most humorous aspects of “Troy and Abed in the Morning!” is how the two hosts usually remain cheerful no matter what is happening. They double down on that joke in this special night-time episode.

Firstly they phone Jeff Winger – pretending he called them – and ask him for his question. Jeff responds with scorn as it’s 3 a.m., and Troy and Abed continue like nothing is wrong. After that hilarious interaction, Annie calls into the show. She seems enthusiastic at first, but then angrily screams at them to shut up and go to sleep while banging on her bedroom door. The hosts once again are comically unfazed about the complaints as they wrap up the show.

1 Original With Jeff

The first “Troy and Abed in the Morning!” is regarded as one of the funniest end tags in the series’ history. In it, the hosts attempt to quiz Jeff about how he stays in such great shape. Yet, Winger sits there bewildered by the fact that his two friends are talking to a camera that isn’t there. Once he learns the show’s not really being filmed, he naturally storms off as it’s six in the morning.

Everything about the scene is fantastic, from Troy and Abed’s over-the-top cheeriness to the posters in the background to Jeff’s reaction. Season one does a lot to establish that Tory and Abed have the best friendship in the series, and this moment is one of the greatest examples.
