Community Every Main Character Ranked By Likability

Only on a few occasions has Community been a show about good versus evil. Most of the time, it’s about the lives of a group of imperfect individuals who all have their own issues and flaws, much like real people. And that realism is what makes each character so likable, yet, not to an equal level.

Certain characters are a lot easier to admire than others, either because they’re generally more kind-hearted or their specific flaws aren’t quite as problematic. Sometimes the entertainment value of a character helps their likability as well. All of which begs the question, out of Greendale’s finest, who is the most and least likable?

10 Ben Chang

Chang’s likability varies throughout the show as much as his personality does. When he’s a student whose desperate to join the Study Group or a member of the Save Greendale Committee, he’s not bad. Yet, when he’s a strict teacher, bodyguard, or tyrannical dictator, it’s hard not to hate him due to all of the terrible things he does.

As his fellow main characters are more consistent with their goodness, he’d have to be considered the most hateable one in the series. At least his crazy antics are exciting, though.

9 Pierce Hawthorne

Another character to regularly switch between good and evil is Pierce. Sometimes he’s so racist, homophobic, and sexist that he’s impossible to like.

Other times, though, it’s difficult not to feel some sympathy for the old man as all he wants is to be accepted by the people around him. In fact, plenty of his controversial comments come from weak attempts to make people laugh. It’s still wildly unacceptable, but at least he’s not trying to be malicious.

8 Ian Duncan

Ian Duncan is a bit of a hypocrite. Early on in the show, he lectures Jeff about the morality of his decisions, yet he does plenty of bad things too. For instance, he tries to use Abed’s mental breakdown in season two for his own personal gain.

Furthermore, he’s a perv who regularly hits on the women at Greendale, some of which are his students. Although, when he does get the chance to take advantage of an emotionally vulnerable Britta, he chooses not to, showing that he is indeed not all bad. And it’s easy to forgive him for certain misdeeds because he’s very funny, and the show misses him when he’s not around.

7 Shirley Bennett

On the surface, Shirley seems like the noblest character in the series. She’s sweet, kind, and looks after her friends.

However, the woman isn’t very tolerant of other people’s choices and beliefs. At one point, she tries to trick the openly Jewish Annie into being Baptised. And later, she secretly replaces the Tofu in Britta’s vegetarian sandwich with a meat substitute. She also harshly judges the people around her, either by openly disapproving of their actions or talking bad behind their backs.

6 Jeff Winger

Whether he’s delivering a classic Winger speech or one of his hilarious one-liners, Jeff is extremely charming and witty. Although, he’s also self-centered and egotistical. Not to mention, he’s the ultimate manipulator, as shown in season one, when he convinces Troy to join the football team for his own selfish needs.

He does get better as time goes on, though. In fact, in the later seasons, he’s a fairly honorable guy. Even if he still uses the occasional lie to avoid doing hard work.

5 Britta Perry

At the beginning of the show, Britta isn’t a great person. Like Jeff, she’s selfish and egotistical, with the additional negative of being a virtue signaller who constantly rants about issues that she does nothing to help fix.

Though, once her intelligence starts to lower, she actually turns into a more sympathetic figure. Primarily because the rest of the group starts to do terrible things to her, plus she begins to make many mistakes. And it’s difficult to dislike someone who’s constantly going through a hard time.

4 Dean Pelton

The Dean’s commitment to making Greendale a great school is admirable. Yes, he makes plenty of blunders like wasting a bunch of the College’s money on a VR machine. But the guy truly cares about the place and the students who go there.

He also tends to be very upbeat and is never afraid to be his quirky, brilliantly dressed self. So because of that, it’s really easy to like the guy.

3 Annie Edison

Annie helps out more people than anyone else in the series, both directly and indirectly. She pushes Jeff into helping Pierce with his step-daughter, she assists Britta and Troy with their budding romance, and she’s the driving force behind the Save Greendale Committee.

Her kind-hearted nature is what makes her so likable though her entertainment value helps too. That’s not to say she’s perfect as she does tend to use her charm and “Disney Face,” as Jeff calls it, to manipulate people, but even then, it’s normally for a good cause.

2 Abed Nadir

Abed does his fair share of bad things. What’s different about him to the others, though, is that he rarely ever hurts someone on purpose. Usually, his misdeeds are a result of him not realizing that he’s doing something wrong.

And while he might not always understand human behavior, he does have a kind heart. This is clear in season one when he patiently waits hours to help Annie with her experiment – unintentionally ruining it – solely because they’re friends. Instances like that plus the many hilarious moments he shares with Troy are why people love Abed so much.

1 Troy Barnes

How can anyone not love Troy? The guy is one of the most consistently entertaining characters in the series, especially when he’s throwing out brilliant one-liners.

Furthermore, he doesn’t have a malicious bone in his body, and on the rare occasion he does hurt someone, it’s by accident. Plus, he’s almost always willing to help someone out, even if it occasionally takes him some time to build up the courage to do so, like when he goes on stage to help Britta at the Dance Recital. There is also the time where he spends his own birthday celebration looking after everyone while they’re drunk. He’s truly a quality human being.
