Community Had A Brilliant Beetlejuice Cameo (That You Probably Missed)

Community season 3 featured a clever Beetlejuice cameo that paid off on a gag set up over a year prior. The NBC sitcom created by Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty) debuted in 2009 and ran for five seasons before it aired on Yahoo! Screen for its sixth and final season. The highly underrated series was one of the smartest comedies in recent memory.

It certainly didn’t hurt that Community was headlined by an ensemble cast that consisted of Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Chevy Chase. The seven served as the “study group,” a ragtag collection of students who came together while at Greendale Community College before evolving into a family with memorable moments and complex dynamics. The show was enhanced by numerous callbacks, Easter eggs, and running gags throughout the series.

If any comedy show deserved extra viewings, it would be Community. Though there were a lot of comedic situations presented at the front and center of the plot, many of the best gags occurred in the background. For example, Abed helped a woman give birth in a sequence that took place entirely in the background of an episode. One of the most amusing gags, however, was when someone dressed as Beetlejuice walked by the study room. The Easter egg came after the name of the titular character from Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was said aloud a third time. This was a nod to the 1988 movie in which Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice would be summoned after repeating his name three times. Unlike the film, the Community’s Beetlejuice took 20 months to appear.

The Community Beetlejuice Easter Egg Spanned Three Seasons

The first Beetlejuice mention came in the Community season 1 episode “Communication Studies.” Michelle Slater (Lauren Stamile) met Jeff in the parking lot, and rather than use Britta’s real name, Slater pretended to forget it and tried jogging her memory with other B-words like “bitter, butter, Beetlejuice.”

Exactly nine months later, in November 2011, the second “Beetlejuice” was spoken in the season 2 episode titled “Cooperative Calligraphy.” The episode focused on Annie’s lost purple pen, which was presumed to have been stolen by a member of the study group. To prove their innocence, they stripped off their clothes to prove they each didn’t have the pen. During the search, Britta saw Jeff’s underwear and said that he normally wears “stripey turquoise Beetlejuice numbers.”

The conclusion to the Beetlejuice gag occurred in October 2012 during the annual Halloween episode. In season 3’s “Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps,” the study group realizes that one member is a secret psychopath after taking a test administered by Britta. They then take turns at telling spooky stories to test each other’s reactions and emotions. Before the pre-Halloween party is ruined, Annie uses on Britta’s computer to check her playlist. She mentions that Britta only has the Beetlejuice soundtrack, and immediately following that line of dialogue, someone in a Beetlejuice costume walked directly behind Annie in the scene. It’s a “blink and you’ll miss it” joke, but with the three years of set-up and the spot-on reference to the movie, the “Beetlejuice” gag is one of the best jokes in Community’s history.
